McDonalds milkshake

Yeah, my bad. They are pasterised it's the way they are produced and kept which makes them a listeria risk. If you have drunk a few I wouldn't worry now - no point, maybe just mention it to the midwife. The chances of catching listeria are very low - but personally I am avoiding everything which has a risk by it.

They are pasturised, but I can definitely say that I'm sure the machine at the McDonalds I worked at wasn't taken apart and cleaned everyday. I'm not sure exactly how often it got cleaned, but as you can imagine, when they're opening the top of the machine and toping the milk up a few times a day, there is plenty of opportunity for bacteria to build up. Ordinarily it wouldn't be a problem, but it can pose a small risk since our immune systems are weakened.

I'm sure the people who already drank it are fine though. I think with this sort of thing, you really need to make your own mind up about whether you should drink it or not.

You can have ice cream from McDonalds. The reason it's soft is the process. It is pasteurized and safe to eat! If you don't believe me, call them and ask. It's that simple.

WHAT really what about booster juice? I think they use frozen yogurt though..

I went and bought one after reading this thread  I hadn't had one in years. It was delish

McDonald's milkshakes are made using liquid shake mix, not soft ice cream. Their machine is just a big ice cream maker. They wouldn't be able to sell it if it wasn't pasteurized. It wouldn't be FDA approved and every restaurant product has to be approved. BTW, the machine goes into clean cycle twice a day and the machine is set to a temperature that bacteria won't grow in. It's also completely torn apart twice a week. One of the corporate managers of the franchise is a family friend and I asked her about it and this is what she told me. So it is safe to enjoy the shakes/McFlurry's as you wish.

just got this from macdonalds website
McDonald's has two types of milkshake machines. One pasteurises the milk every night and is taken apart and cleaned once a week. The other one is disassembled and sanitised every night. The milk can be topped up, but is completely discarded every week. This way, McDonald's can ensure its' milkshakes are always safe to drink.

so atleast we no there pasteurised!!! as ive been drinking them didnt even enter my head not to, have done in all my pregnancies.

Thanks, I was just about to post this but you beat me to it! I think sometimes we are quick to jump to conclusions without the proper insight.

Human kind has survived since the dawn of time on unpasturized milk, dirty water, undercooked meat...etc...when my mom was pregnant with me, what wasn't allowed then is now OK and I'm sure when these beans are having children, things that are OK now (or No-Nos) may very well be different then too...

I was told they were a NO. something to do with the bacteria listeria i think.

My friend is due in 8 weeks, and I think she drank a milkshake everyday since she found out she was pregnant. Lol. She's a skinny minny anyway, and her baby is healthy, no complications so far. :)

oh god im heartbroken! a mcdonalds chocolate milkshake is one of my big cravings! didnt even occur to me that it wasnt allowed! :(:(

I'm going to have one tomorrow after I've been grocery shopping. I love them - vanilla is my fav. I read through the whole thread and assertained that they are as safe as anything else.

Aren't they just the best when you really, really have to strain to suck them up through the straw?

Oh dear, all these things we can't have eh?

McDonalds Milkshakes and Ice-creams are FINE though.

I may have one on Tuesday when I am near McDonalds now I have read this thread

ahh doesn't seem to me like anyone can find a real reason that they're a no-no, so i'm definitely still going to have them.

if you're convinced it's because of the machine, i'd stay away from all whipped creams in restaurants, too. i work in a restaurant and the cream on desserts is whipped using a machine. i don't see the problem at all!!

I don't have them anyway - I'm vegetarian and I remember reading somewhere (ages ago) that they have chicken fat in them! Yuk :(

I was told to steer clear of these too! Sorry x

oooooooh this is defo not true!!

i'm a very strict lifelong vege and i can tell you that the milkshakes are approved by the vegetarian society so they're safe :)

i did know that in the strawberry milkshakes they used cochineal (a red colouring from insects) but i just googled that to show you and apparently, they've even replaced that with a vege alternative!

crap food with little nutritional value, but definitely suitable for vegetarians, and in my opinion, safe in pregnancy :)
