Under tools ~ Go to "manage addons" then toolbars and extentions .. make sure Java(tm) Plug-In 2 SSV Helper is enabled.

Browser ...yes do you use explorer, firefox, chrome or other? Depending on that depends where the settings are.

I know - this is 'pants round the ankles' embarrassing innit it's internet explorer 8 - I checked the bit that Chaos sent me too and it was ok, I've also had a pop up to update my java thingy and agreed so don't think it's that either?

Have you tried going to user cp, scroll down on the left hand side there is a section labeled "private messaging" and under that it says "send private message"?
