I've been offered a membrane sweep for a weeks time, and i would like to know anyone's experiences of them and if they work?
Would also like to know if they hurt at all?

Mine did not work...I had it done at 40 weeks and again at 41 weeks....didn't go into labor until 41+4 and baby was born at 41+5....i guess it appears to work for some, but not many...i really think its like anything else, if your baby was gonna begin his/her journey out, then these things will help, but if they aren't then it doesn't do a whole heck of a lot

of course if someone is threatening you with induction, its worth a shot, thats why i did it!

Oh and it didn't hurt, ...depends on your pain tolerance though and who is doing it. It basically feels like a vigurous cervical exam. It didn't hurt me at all, although the second one did make me crampy for 3 days and i did loose lots of my plug, but it grew back anways

I had it done with my second, and it didn't really do much. It didn't really hurt too bad, but it also wasn't pleasant either.

Mine diddnt hurt and as soon i had one I started loosing my plug, then the next morning I starting getting contractions then by that evening I had her :D

24 hours from sweep to baby for me :)

Mine worked a treat at 39 weeks. It didnt hurt at all and 48 hours after having it I was holding my daughter. :)

I had 3 and none of them worked, it took a c-section to shift LO. They really aren't too bad, bit uncomfortable but over and done with quickly

I had two with my first lo and neither really hurt - just a very little bit uncomfortable. Bit it didn't do anything.
with my 2nd i had one sweep and yes it brought water to my eyes - it definitely worked though - DD was born about 48 hours afterwards.

I think if it hurts or not really depends on the person doing the sweep...neither of mine were very painful, but the first sweep hurt more than the second and the second was done by someone else

I had 2 sweeps - the first at 41+1, and then another at 41+4
They didn't work though and I was induced at 41+6 and LO born the next evening at 42 weeks...
Yeah, they did hurt a bit, but certainly nothing unbearable! And I bled quite a lot after my first...

My midwife attempted one at 40+6 (she said she couldn't properly hook around my cervix because it was still quite far back) but must have done something since my LO was born the next day. It didn't hurt, just uncomfortable xx

I had one with last son and it worked for me!!!!

Good luck anyway x x

I had a sweep at around 4.00pm on the Saturday by 4.30pm on the Sunday (24 hours later) I was being discharged from the hospital with my beautiful baby :pink:

Only one I had and it defo worked for me :) .. Good luck xx

I had my membranes swept on a monday and went into labour on tuesday night...it didnt really hurt all that much, it was definitely uncomfortable, but not bad at all...

I had one at 40+1. Personally, I found it quite painful, but it was quick (only a few seconds) and 15 hours after the sweep, I was holding my daughter so it was very effective. I'd have one again this time if offered.

I had one yesterday and it certainly wasn't painful, midwife did say I was 2cm dilated tho so wonder if this would mean it was more comfortable than if cervix was still tight Have had lots of bloody show since but that's it. In fact less bh than I have had previously.

mine hurt and didn't help with ds1.. didn't get one with ds2. I know some people for who it's worked though! x

i had two with my ydd.

the first did nothing. i was 3cm dilated, and i had no cramping from it at all.

the second, i was 4cm dilated. i had some mild cramping after. it stopped after an hour. but when i went to the hospital 5 hours later, i was 6cm. i had my daughter less than an hour later.

Great to see some sweep successes, I'm having one at 40+1 next week, if he's not made an appearance yet. I'll be stalking this thread!

My doctor said it would be offered to be starting at 38 weeks since I went until 41 weeks with my daughter. I think the ultimate goal for them would be for it to make it happen a bit earlier but not necessarily right away at 38 weeks. I'm seeing them on Tuesday so I'll see what happens!

Don't remember getting it done with my first pregnancy so if I did, it definitely didn't hurt and definitely didn't work! lol

i had a sweep at 37+2 with my son and 12 hours later i was in established labour :) but sadly 38 hour labour lol like the other ladies have said uncomfortable but not unbearable and over in seconds. apperntly it will only work if your body is ready to go in labour. i was already 2cms when i had mysweep and cervix was thin so perhaps thats why it worked x
