Dr has just prescribed my 10 week old movicol as since he has been on his lactose free milk he has been constipated. When the pharmacist gave it to me she said the doctor didnt say how much to give (although on the label it says take one twice a day or once a day to relieve constipation) she said she would be careful with it because he is so young and to maybe give half. There was also a nurse in the shop who saw what i was been given and said to be careful how much i give. Now im worried about giving it to him he does have a tummy ache as constipated have tried water and cant have lactulose because of his lactose intolerance. The box also says for severe constipation in children over 2. I thought i would just give him a tiny bit to start and see how he gets on?

Is it infant movicol? I gave this to my lo at that age, normally one sachet in halves so half a sachet twice a day. However when he was in loads of pain and hadnt pooed for a few days I did give up to two a day.

Thats the one! Oh and it says to mix with water, but my LO wouldnt take water then, so I used to mix it with the feed. It still worked, for me..

Great thanks good to know someone else has used it on baby too. Will give him some now see what he thinks

I do warn you...he WILL poo! LOL Maybe a bit more than you want, but it does the job!

Hi, new to this site but have also just been prescribed Movitol for my 10 week old as he is also lactose intolerant and constipated.
Have been told to give 1 full sachet tonight and then 1/2 a sachet per day until we see some results.
Just wondered how long it took to work for you both? And how long you had to use it for?

It will probably have worked by the next stool movement, if not, the one after that, and I suggest using it each time they atre bunged up. Its sorts out a solution and not the cause, so maybe offering water etc. may help as a long term solution.

Editted and welcome!!

Hi,
My 8 wk old baby has also just been prescribed Movicol 1/2 sachet per day for now. She too has become constipated after being put on lactose free formula (having first been given lactulose, which obviously affected her as it contains lactose)! After seeing her in such discomfort from the lactulose I'm now nervous about given her the Movicol. She's also on gaviscon for reflux and the dr's warned me that Movicol can irritate this problem. Has anyone else experienced this? Does anyone have any alternative suggestions for the constipation? I'm looking into baby massage not sure if this will help.
Needless to say we've not had much sleep in the last 8 weeks as baby has been in constant discomfort. Thanks!

We found it took a week to shift a blockage - and then oh my! The poo came!

Abby didn't get it until she was a bit older but I will say that getting the dosage right can be tricky. We're on a third of a sachet once a day. That seems to have it about right but the trick is not to stop once the movement comes (which we kept doing as there was just soooooo much coming out)

We tried all the alternative remedies, plenty of fibre, prunes, orange juice etc but nothing worked. If your LO is on formula only then I'd say it is probably the best solution.

I am a bit confused though as we were told its important to make sure she takes lots of fluid when on it. but that was water or juice - milk doesn't count. Not sure how that works with an unweaned baby!

She wont drink it plain so we mix it with a little juice.

My lil boy is 6 weeks and has been on it since Wednesday. We were told to give half to one sachet a day. I had planned on sticking to half until the weekend but he was so miserable that we decided to do the opposite and give him more and reduce after. I also want to help the block pass. He's pooing not too long after having it but, so far, nothing else during the day and goes right back to being miserable. I really hope it will clear properly once it really kicks in! Yeah, the poo will be really mushy and stinky so I suggest you don't put your kiddo in their best outfit, just in case... :haha:

His pediatrician did say that the pharmacists would raise concerns (as they did) about the age but that it was something they gave often and have seen great results from. My kiddo had the Lactulose but it made him even more gassy and then refluxy (which makes me wonder if he really isn't lactose intolerant since they've never checked?) and he kept choking on it as well. :nope:

Wishing you all lots of poo! :haha:
