Hi ladies,

I'm expecting baby number two in 3 months and I already have a 19 month old daughter. We are moving her into a new room so the baby can have the ready made nursery and my daughter gets a brand new decorated 'girlie' room. I want to move her over before the baby comes as to iron out any problems we may have with the transition. My DH and I are really unsure what to do about a bed...is she too young for a toddler bed? Can anyone shed some light on this please?

Thanks x

It really depends on the child, ds was ready at 2.5 and we took the side off his cot. For the past month he has been staying in a regular height full size single bed and has had no problems.
Realistically the baby won't need the room or cot right away so you have 6-9 months for the transition.
You can get low beds, beds with part sides, bed guards... so I guess you can make it work anyway.
Xx

We moved our DD to a "big girl" bed at 19 months and it actually went great for us! We skipped the whole toddler bed thing and just put a twin mattress on the floor, so it wouldn't be intimidating and if she rolled off it would hurt. For the first couple of weeks she'd sleep on the floor just as often as the bed, but had no complaints, and then eventually she decided the bed was more comfortable. Once she was sleeping on the bed every single night, we just added the frame to lift it off the floor, and she's been sleeping in it ever since. :flower:

This is a great idea! We have yet to move our DS into his own room and maybe I'll try this idea! Gotta get it done ASAP seeing as how baby girl is arriving in 3 weeks lol.

Our daughter was 19 months old when dd2 arrived and like you we wanted to move her into a new room so baby could have the nursery.

We took her out and got her tohelp choose the colours (pink, lol) that she wanted.

We bought her a normal sized single bed rather than a toddler bed as that just seemed a total waste of money.

We moved her over at 17 months and she transitioned perfectly. We wanted to do it well in advance of the baby coming so she wouldn't feel like we were moving her out of her room becaus of the baby, we wanted to give her time to settle in without feeling it was all about the baby. She loved the fact she'd 'helped' us do her new room up.

We started off with a babygate on her door so that if she woke during the night we knew she'd still be safe in her room. There was only the odd occasion that we'd find her asleep on her floor by the door gate!

It definitely made it easier having her in a big girls bed, we also explained to her before baby arrived that as she was a big girl now she could have a big girl bed and give her cot to her baby sister. She was quite proud of the fact her sister was using her old bed!

Definitely depends on the child I think but my dd was in her toddler bed from 17-18 months if I remember rightly, I was ever so worried about it but she really did suprise me and took to it fantastic! She's now 3 and is in a normal bed and does just fine :)

They've got some lovely toddler beds, my dd had a peppa pig one and it had little sides on to keep her safe. Give it a go and see how it goes, can't do any harm :) x
