Hi all, just started using flats and some fitteds on my daughter after six months of using pockets and still trying to get used to the difference! Got some wrap questions for you more experienced ladies...

I know a wrap needs to be washed if soiled, but not necessarily if only wet. I've read a wet nappy wrap can be wiped out and reused, but what do you wipe out with? Just your normal wipes of choice? Does the wrap then need to be dried before going over the next nappy? And how many times can you use a wrap before it needs washing? And I take it if theres any dampness or wicking to the outside then the wrap needs washing even if the nappy was only wet? And what about wraps that have been used overnight? Is that an automatic washing situation?

Sorry if these questions are really dense just not used to this all yet, but I am loving it - why did I faff with pockets for so long?

There are different kinds of wrap, some have the plasticky PUL inner and others have a sort of cotton-feel inner over the top of that (think Kawaii are cottony, as an example). You can wipe out the plasticky ones if you want (I'd just use your wipes, whatever they are but use them quite dry so you don't need to dry the wrap after) but I wouldn't wipe out a cottony one as it probably wouldn't do much good.

However, I don't normally bother wiping them out whatever they are. If the outer of the flat or fitted underneath was only a bit damp, you can reuse them straight away without wiping. If it was a bit wetter than that, I would normally just leave the wrap to air - hang it up and use a different wrap, then swap back at the next change. If the legs got wet, I don't reuse them.

I'd do the sniff test to see if a wrap can be reused. If it smells of wee, I wash it. Normally I would reuse one wrap continuously (no airing in between uses) up to three times, or I will alternate two wraps over the course of a day. I will not reuse a wrap that's been used overnight.

Thanks Rachel, once again you've been super helpful :) another quick question, I got a couple of fitteds preloved and lo had one (bambineo bamboo) on this afternoon for about 4 hours. When I took it off it smelled really strongly of wee - is that normal or a sign I need to strip? I washed it with my other nappies on a normal wash before using, but now I wonder if I needed to do more?

Edit: I've just rinsed the nappy in cold water befor putting in the bucket as I've just done a nappy wash today and I didn't want it in there smelling for a day or 2 and now the smell seems to be gone - didn't know if that made any difference?

It could just be that your LO did a big smelly wee, it happens! If you notice that the nappy always smells more than others do, it would be worth stripping it maybe. But if it's a more absorbent nappy than others you're using, bear in mind that wee sometimes does smell so you might just be smelling the extra wee in the nappy.
