I can't believe how fast time has gone by! Tristan is nearly five months old and it will only be a month until I start weaning him. I have decided to wait until the recommended 6 months because he has quite dry skin and the health visitor said that waiting until 6 months would be particularly important for him.

So, I am a bit apprehensive about he whole weaning thing, especially after exclusively breastfeeding up until now - so all this pureeing (sp?) food, freezing stuff into ice cube trays, mixing weird combinations of food and mixing breast milk with stuff seems quite daunting.

I got my best mate to compile a list of stuff I will need and will need to remember and ...it is a lot!!!

One good thing - I usually buy a couple of baby magazines a month and they usually have great freebies. I have managed to get a couple of weaning items for free! Yippee!

So, I am ready...well, sort of.

Good luck with it. I have found so far that rather than expressing milk to mix with every feed of rice, I have just added a bit of warm water to it. Much easier IMO. Also, my HV said that's it's okay to mix full fat cow's milk with veggies/fruit when you start weaning. Quite a useful tip I thought. I know what you mean about all this new equipment when you have just been used to a boob and a baby but it's not as scientific as people think. I just have loads of bowls and spoons, bibs, a blender, ice cube trays, freezer bags and my ingredients and that's about it! Tristan's gonna love it, I'm sure.

Goodluck! TBH, when you first begin I would just buy puree jars... We have organic stuff here which is what I use. I would NEVER have thought it was worth the time to puree stuff myself at this point. I may consider it once she is actually eating more.

Good luck! It's actually quite a lot of fun once you get into the weaning (well until they scream to get something off your plate )

good luck hon! once you get started its lots of fun :) and we're all here for lots of support and advice :)

My health visitors are all for baby-led weaning rather than parent-led. With baby led you just give the baby the foods that you eat, you don't need to blend the foods. We watched a video and you give the baby whole foods so that they can learn what foods look like from a young age and they can feel the texture etc rather than giving them brown/orange mush. Also your encouragd to all sit together to eat.
It was really interesting and after doing parent led weaning with my son i'm going to give this a try with Niamh. Its going to be messy but it will save huge amounts of time as i'll just need to prepare one healthy meal for all of us and won't need to blend a thing.

we do a bit of both really, though the food she gets off of our plates is minimum because of salt. We like to give her lots of finger foods though, broccoli, peas, rusks, baby cookies, cheerios, grated cheese, avocado, berries....really there are tons of things you can give :)
