So I wanted to give baby my last name but FOB is adamant about him having his last name so we agreed to hyphenate. I'm just curious as to which name should come first. And also, when you look at a hyphenated name, which are you more likely to 'drop' when saying the name?

My son will be Luciano Giovanni Ryan Colombo-Shields

If it were a school/bank/etc social setting and only one name were to be used which last name do you think it would be? Thanks!

Traditionally, the mother's name comes first. OH and I are double barrelling our baby's name, and will be Godden-Smith. They will probably be known by the first surname x

I work In a hotel and when taking reservations our system only allows for so many letters, so we would usually drop the second part if it doesn't fit.

Hope that's a little help for you :)

I would always assume with a hypenated name that neither part could be dropped. I have a few friends and colleagues with double barrelled surnames and I would never think to drop either part of it. So I would go with whichever way you think flows the best xxxx

I don't think either part gets dropped. My mum has a hyphenated surname and never have I heard of someone refer to her by just one part of the surname.

I have a double barrelled surname. Before I was married (when I had a different double barrelled name :haha:) my first surname used to get dropped most of the time. My second surname was quite long though so it was a mouthful to say both. Now sometimes my first surname gets dropped but usually I get called by both.
