I've done some research the past few days and found out a lot of things that I did not know before.

Let me first give you a brief summary of my situation:

  • I am 30 years old (DH is 37).
  • I am of average weight and DH is heavily overweight.
  • We have been married for 3 years and have been TTC for more than a year now.
  • At first (for about half a year), we took some enhancement products available at our local Dis-chem pharmacy but because of the expense and having no luck in conceiving, we had to stop.
  • We've been improving our diet for a year now (although hubby isn't really losing weight) and take our dogs for a walk each afternoon. This is not anything new so I don't think it has any influence on my AF.
  • I track my cycles each month and pinpoint when my next AF should come. I try my best to track my O but do not use OPKs. I am never more than 2 or 3 days late with my AF.
  • At this moment in time, I am 11 days late on my AF and did 2 HPT - both negative, and a blood test yesterday - also negative.

Now to the questions:

  1. Can O occur without having your AF? Can I O this weekend, after missing my AF?
  2. Could it be that when I thought I was O, I was mistaken and it has just not happened yet.
  3. What foods do you recommend for us to take that will act as a natural 'booster' for him and for me? I've read that watermelon is a good booster for him as well as food rich in folic acid. (I take 5mg of folic acid every day but did not know that it was good for him to take it too)
  4. I usually buy low fat milk and honestly don't consume a lot of dairy products (except perhaps cheese), but have now read that High Fat Dairy is better - especially ice cream. Is this true?

Well, this is it for now. I hope that someone can help with these questions :)

Thank you for reading!

Hi Eelse!

I read through this, and just confirming you definitely do not take your temps? And have you been to a doctor yet?

As for your questions, if you have not had AF, you have not O'd. You can have AF without ovulating, but I think you can't ovulate and not have AF (unless you are pregnant of course!) That means ovulation could now happen at any time. It could be on the weekend, or in two more months (all while AF is missing in action).

I had clockwork 28-30 day cycles, then in May 2014 I had a 45 day cycle. I knew I did not o on my normal CD19-18 as I took my temps, but that didn't stop me taking HPTs and hoping for a positive, even though I knew I hadn't released an egg. Finally AF came, but the same thing happened the following month. After 47 days I went to the doctor crying as I didn't know my body anymore.

She sent me for tests and found I have cysts on my ovaries (pcos) which causes my horomones to go wonky and stop ovulation. That cycle was 89 days without AF and the fertility specialist doctors put me on medicine to make my period come without ovulation so they could start testing. We saw the fertility specialist around CD60. Without AF being brought on, I don't know how long I would have gone without AF.

As for O, if it starts going crazy I would see a doctor. I saw a doctor after 10 months and she was helpful. If a doctor isn't helpful. Get a second opinion. We have a right to know what's happening with our bodies.

You can have annovulatory cycles, where you do not ovulate but still get AF, I think that's why mine were longer as the horomones took longer to build up.

But if you ovulated, you will get AF approximately the same number of days afte ovulation each month as your body needs to flush out the egg and the lining (if not pregnant).

Thank you Lirpa11.

I'm sorry to hear about the problems you had but very glad to see that you had a BFP recently.

AFM: I don't take my temp (didnt, but bought a thermometer yesterday) so hopefully AF shows up sometime soon and I can start monitoring correctly (I took my temp now when I woke up, just to have a comparison later on). I was always 28-30 days, like clockwork, if it was day 29 or 30, I would usually get my hopes up and take a test. I assumed my O was between day 12 and 16 somewhere (we DTD every second day then) because my AF was always so predictable.

I hope that it was just a funky month with a late O but I will inform my doctor of all my concerns when I see him tomorrow (Thursday).

Thank you for reading and for your help, I really appreciate it!!

An update:

I'm spotting now so AF should come in full force by tomorrow - I'm just glad the :witch: is back on her own... LOL!

So, CD1 for me starts tomorrow (as long as my cycle goes as it normally does, which after this last 41 day cycle, I'm not so sure about).

Thanks everyone for reading!

Hello EElse! So I have done a lot of research or used the google haha when it comes to fertility, anything that interests me in the slightest I try to find as much information about as possible. As for if you can O without having AF, it is possible but if you're not getting AF every month to O, unless you have gone to a doctor though or done charting, temping, checking your CM, etc you won't know for sure.

It is possible to O at a different time than what you thought, it's how some women have gotten pregnant at such different times in their cycle. You think you O 14 days after your first day of AF but that might not be correct at all, you could actually O right after AF, right before or anytime really. It's best to chart, temp and check CM regularly if you're not certain to when you will O. Everyone is different when it comes to our cycles but it's best to discuss with a doctor about your concerns over it.

As for what foods to eat to try and naturally conceive I honestly have no clue, but if dairy helps I'm on the right track! Haha

Good luck and I hope this helps!

Thanks Akirkland! I am going to start temping from my next cycle (which hopefully starts tomorrow as I started spotting today), to make sure of when my O comes.

I'm seeing the doctor tomorrow so maybe he can also prescribe something to help us conceive.

Thank you and good luck to you when you start TTC!
