Hi there everyone :) me and my partner were stuck on a few names for our son to be and came up with the idea of naming him after his dad! (i.e. me lol) anyway i was wondering what the general consensus on this is, I'm all for it but was wondering if this is a great idea or a bit old fashioned would love some opinions.

19 weeks to go

Being named after a family member is still a pretty common thing to do, but I've seen more people use dad's middle name or mum's middle name instead of their first name. That way the child will still have an original name, and you wouldn't get the two persons confused. :)

My daughter for example, her middle name is Elaine, so is my middle name, and my sister's and my mother's. So we carry on a family name through middle name, not first. :P Just a suggestion.

If we have a boy he will be named after my DH but he won't be a "junior"...their middle names will be different.

Thanks for the advice :) how would you tell them apart? lol will definitely go ahead with it unless we think of something else, great to see it still happening!

My cousin named her son after her husband (they live in the US) and it's very confusing. He also isn't a junior so they are just referred to as the same name or sometimes "big xxx" or "little xxx". I'm personally not keen but maybe that's because it's not very common over here so I'm not used to it.

This would depend on your name but can you combine it with something (i.e. if you're Tom, he could be Tom John :)) or shorten it in a different way to yours as a nickname(i.e. you're Jonathan nn John, he'd be Nathan)? I think it's a lovely idea naming a child after their parent in some way but I'd probably want to make sure to give them some individuality name-wise. Both to avoid confusion and for their own self-image. Are you going to let us know your name?

My DH's name is Kevin Bernard and my son's name is Kevin Zachary. We call our son Zachary.

Thanks everyone for the great support :) We've decided to go with it, and to answer amygdala, my sons name will be Te Awhiroa Lachlan Kuka-Sweet. Bit of a mouthful but thats how Maori names are, it means the long embrace :)

Love the name Lachlan... that would make a great 1st name?

lol she's scottish, her dads family has a lot of lachlans so we decided to keep it as a middle name :)

My hubby has the same name as his dad and it's a pain in the butt  the only way anyone knows which we're we're talking about is by the "big" and "little" prefixes before the name.

My DH's name is Anthony but he's always gone by Tony so if we have a boy he will be Anthony and called Anthony or by his initials A.J....personally, this is my husband's idea...not mine.

I have the same name as my Mum and I went by my middle name (which I hate) till I was about eighteen, I now go by a shortened version of Elizabeth, but for everything official I still use Elizabeth. This means any post we get she opens and it drives me insane! I also feel annoyed that they couldnt be arsed to think of an original name to give me.

I wouldn't do it.
