Newbie to Gestational Diabetes

I had my class today at the diabetic clinic. The monitors were provided to us free of charge, we just need to buy the strips and needles. Officially tested for the first time tonight after supper and my number was good. Although the nurse did say pregnant women find the morning ones to be the hardest to control so I will see what tomorrow brings. I made some low GI bread on the weekend that is quite nice, so nice in fact that I will probably keep making it after this ordeal is over!

I'm 35 weeks pregnant and really struggling with my morning fast reading. I started on metformin on monday morning 1 tablet in the morning and 1 in the evening, and then last night changed 2 tablets in the morning and 2 in the evening. So far they have made no difference at all. Infact if anything my reads are generally slightly higher than they were before. I was told to eat Weetabix as a snack before bed but i am going to change it to something more rich in protein like nuts and meat to see if that makes a difference. They are already inducing me at 39 weeks because of the metformin i dont really want to be induced any earlier which they will do if i have to go on insulin. Fingers crossed the protein snack and the metformin kick in soon!

The diabetes nurse advised me that metformin helps your body to use the insulin that is already there more effectively. If you just aren't producing enough then it won't help with fasting levels so that's why insulin is introduced.

I have found that the metformin didn't help me and I've had to gradually increase my insulin as time has gone on and my pregnancy has progressed. Having said that there's not much longer till you're due so hopefully the tablets will keep your levels in check long enough to avoid the injection.

Good luck and hope they kick in for you!

I really fancy croissants grilled till slightly crispy then spread with Nutella.

Only 6ish weeks then I can pig out.

its always been my fasting level that has been the issue, i got put on slow release insulin overnight, they didnt bother with metformin as apparantley it doesnt do anything for fasting levels, what ive foiund is if i eat any later than 9 on an evening my levels are higher on a morning and if i do my insulin later than 10.15 that contributes too, i got told they will deliver by 38 weeks but when i seen consultant on monday she has booked me in for 39 weeks as if i go in before there policy is to give steriods which would mean because im on insulin ill be in hospital for 48 hours beause the steriods can effect sugar levels and the effectivness of the insulin, because my levels are pretty much under control and im still on a fairly low dose of insulin she agreed to wait till 39 weeks unless any thing changes of course, ive also booked in for a section too x

Peanut butter and nuts didn't work for me. You are better off with a pure protein drink of 20grams of protein or eating a serving of cottage cheese or plain greek yogurt. Nuts has like 6 grams, it's just not enough usually. If I get 18-20 grams of protein right before bed, my numbers are great. I got this tip from other's with GD. My fasting numbers have been consistently below 90. I was 84 this morning. Please try it!
