no check for heartbeat at 8wk app

Hi all, I had my first midwife app today (booking) and thought that the midwife would check the heartbeat and midwife said they dont do it anymore and i have to wait for scan. I was hoping for today to heat heartbeat as lost pregnancies in past. is this normal not to have heartbeat checked. My next midwife app is not till 16wks. I seem to remember with my last baby (2004) that i had the heartbeat checked at 8wks, has things changed that much???

I had my booking in appointment today as well. I was hoping to hear the heartbeat, and was dissapointed i didnt.
Ive got a scan next week, but still wanted a bit of reasurance.
Whens your scan ?

I was not able to book it yet as all i got from scan dept was a answermachine!! so will try again tomorrow

Hopefully your scan will show good news - you got more than I got at my first midwife apt!!!! I was there 5 minutes only!!!

I had abooking in appointment at 13 weeks, midwife said she would try to listen for HB but I was not to be disappointed if she couldn't. Think 8 weeks is quite early, unless its a scan. Good luck anyway

8 weeks is too early to get a HB unless its through a scan, at minimum you would hear it from 10 weeks but even thats no guaruntee and can be hard to find.

Thanks all, i must be remembering wrong if thats the case, dont remember having such a gap between midwife apps also, 8wks then 16wks. its all new to me now, seems like its all changed.

my DR told me that I wouldnt hear anything at my next appt as it will still be early at 10 weeks so at 8 weeks you wouldnt hear one unless you had a scan as I heard my lil beans at my scan at 7+5. it would seem like you would have another appt before 16 weeks though I go every 4 weeks. did they say why your appts are so far away? if it were me I would ask for a appt sooner if you bug them usually they will get you in sooner. I know I have been every 2 weeks since I got my bfp. also have had 3 scans! I worry too much though...good luck to you!!

Hey, I heard heartbeat at 14 weeks - midwife said she doesn't do it before then as baby is so low down in pelvic area that it could be hiding and too difficult to find. She was very clear in pointing out that even at 14 weeks she doesn't find it 'a lot of the time' as baby may still not have 'popped' above pelvic bone - luckily mine had so I heard it.

I think they do it so as not cause unnecessary panic as just because they can't find it, it certainly does not mean that it's not there.

Also I went to MW firstly at 6 weeks and then didn't see her until 14 weeks and now will see her at just over 20 weeks, if that's any help!

Blimey sweetheart even the best dopplers don't pick up the heart beat until 10 weeks so don't be disappointed. You'll see it at the 12 week scan.

wow, thats along time in between appointments...mine are every 4 weeks.

mine are every 6 weeks cos im a worrier, here i think they are every 8 weeks to begin with

I had my vaginal scan today and was expecting to see/hear a heartbeat but the dr couldn't find the embryo. We were only able to see the gestational sac. I'm 7w 5 or 6 days and I'm having another ultrasound on Thursday. I think if your dr is not going above and beyond for you maybe you should switch doctors! Mine was very helpful and offer to draw some blood to see how my hcg levels are and schedule me for a second ultrasound in a bigger hospital with an specialist.

Good luck to both of us! Maybe we're just getting ahead and need to be more patient... it will show when it's ready not when we want to see it

i had a baby in 2006 and i didnt know anything about that. With my first baby i got a scan at 11+ weeks and saw heart beat etc but didnt get to hear it! With this baby have had two scans so far one at 9 weeks and another on monday there and only saw heartbeat. i know last time with a dopplar i didnt get to hear heart beat until 15/16 weeks x
