No Gestational Sac

I had my first scan today and they found no sac. I am 2-3 weeks from conception (4-5 by doctors calculations from last period).

They took bloods and called to say that I have high level HCG and want me to come back on Wednesday to have further bloods taken to check HCG levels again.

I had what for me was an abnormal period 2 1/2 weeks ago at which point I was getting negative results from home pregnancy tests. Now (this weekend) I have had 4 positive tests. I don't get why, if I lost a baby earlier in the month all my tests are coming back positive and I have high HCG levels!

It is completely stressing me out so if anyone has any advice, please let me know.

It sounds to me that what you thought was your period was actually a late ovulation with bleeding, or implantation bleeding. It does happen sometimes. It is much too early to rule out a viable pregnancy by ultrasound at 4-5 wks. Many women don't see anything until 7 wks. If you have high HCG levels try not to panic, most likely they just did the scan too early.

Thank you. They really haven't given me much information or comfort so just checking blogs. You are saying the same as a lot of people about it maybe being too early. But when they start talking failed pregnancy it doesn't give much hope

Your HCG levels do sound promising, and like i said i had a scan a little later than u and was only a small, empty sac. I was told that it could be a psuedo sac so no baby would develop, nice huh! Im now 35 weeks pregnant xxx

At this stage a couple days can make all the difference

False hope... BUT I just did a clear blue test (10 minutes ago!)... I have used two this weekend (2 others were 2 different brands) and the clear blue came out Pregnant 2-3 weeks (last one at 11.30 yesterday). Today's came out at 3+ weeks! That means I have rising HCG levels right?

I only did it because I wanted to see if it was showing a drop in HCG... Some bizarre comfort myself and get over it before bad news on Wednesday!!

They gave you a scan incredibly early! Too early to see much I think. With your recent test result everything seems fine. I thought 7 wks was the earliest to see a heart beat.

I just want to comment on the clearblue digitals conception indicator. There has been alot of girls on the board who have used these tests and they have actually not been right alot of the time although sometimes they have. girls have taken them at 1-2 weeks and got 3plus weeks and so on.

I personally took one and mine said 3+ i told hubby and everyone everything was great everything was perfectly going well. I went to the docs . to get a test bloods and hcg they found my numbers were high sent me for scan, and turned out I had msicarried (they seen I was in the process) they left me for a couple days to see if anything would happen. And I took another CBE test and it said 3+ again so i held onto hope. Long story short I wouldnt listent o teh docs over the cbe tests and I ended up having a missed miscarriage and got a massive infection in which I was hospitalized!!!

Just a word of caution on clear blue conception tests!!!

I have to say that the people in my early pregnancy unit have no compassion! I am sorry if they see miscarriages all the time... But this is my first pregnancy, and if I do manage to have a baby at the end of this it will be with no thanks to them!

I have been told this morning that my HCG on Monday was 2926 and progesterone 21.8 BUT because they didn't see anything it is a miscarriage! Another set of bloods taken this morning and waiting for a call. This lovely nurse turned to me and said it will drop as you have miscarried, this will be obvious if the level drops a lot. If it doesn't drop a lot it means more bloods Friday.

I asked what if it rises. And I was told highly unlikely and if it does you will be treated for an ectopic / pregnancy of unknown location!!

I've now had to tell my parents the news as I was so upset this morning I had to call my Dad to come get me from work...

Hi hun,
you only see a gestational sac measuring 2mm at 5 weeks pregnancy or 3 weeks from conception EARLIEST. And at that is only with a highly sensitive vaginal ultrasound, with the normal tummy ultrasound, you see it even later. Before that, there is really nothing to be seen as the sac is still much to small.
I think you should talk to the doctor and not the nurses because the nurses don't really have medical knowledge to explain it to you.

So don't worry, go back in 2 weeks and they should be able to find it. When I go for my early scan, I try to aim to arrange for an appointment at 7 weeks pregnancy or 5 weeks after conception. That way, the U/S should be able to tell me if the pregnancy is viable or not when a HB should be detected latest by end of 7 weeks.

Oh no, I really can't believe they seem to have completely written off the pregnancy, you had a scan very early, I had one at almost 5 weeks with my first and all there was was a little black dot that they said may or may not develop into a baby, well shes 6 now! If they do decide to treat you for an ectopic/pregnancy of unknown origin they better do a scan to check, would be able to see something if they left it and the pregnancy was just developing normally, I really don't think this is over yet sweetie, what an awful worry xxxxx

Thats awful Faith, try and stay positive, they seem to give you the worse case scenario and thats not always the case!!!

Thank you girls. I'm just sitting here waiting for the call. But I spoke to my friend this morning and I have said I will not trust their response - my body is telling me I am pregnant, the HPT is telling me I am pregnant - even yesterday as 3+ result!

No more bloods. I want my records sent to my GP and I am going to keep doing the HPT until that tells me I am not! And I will be trying to go private or to another hospital in future.

I am impatient but also, not great on the phone right now as keep crying. Will wait for them, they said results are in at 1 and they rung quite soon after on Monday so any time now.

SO!!!!! I haven't had a drop in HCG. I haven't lost a baby yet! BUT my HCG has only gone up by just over a 1000 instead of doubling. So more tests Friday xx
