I started with a sore throat a few days ago and it's just got worse and worse, it's turned into tonsilitis and last night it kept waking me up and today it's just got even worse, like I'm swallowing razor blades, so I went to chemist this aft and she said there nothing I can take cos Im pregnant and I have to go see my doctor, can't see my doctor till tues tho! she said I can't even take hall soothers! so I'm in lots of pain and I'm not a happy bunny, has anyone had tonsilitis while pregnant, if so did your doc prescribe u with anything? thanks x

Hi There

Sorry to hear you feel so poorly. I am a sufferer of the dreaded tonsilitus, both when I'm pregnant and when I'm not. In my experience, doc has always given me penicillen VK or amoxycillin (sp) which he advised were both ok when pregnant.

I know you cant get to the docs yet tho, so in the mean time you could gargle with TCP - yep it smells gross, and doesnt taste that great, but it works as a disinfectant for the tonsils and may help reduce swelling which will help the pain.

I am sorry you feel crap - and I know just how rotten this is. Perhaps try paracetamol before you sleep to help you get some proper rest. I always find that I need to suck on ice cubes or lollys to help numb the pain - this does help too.

Good luck hon and hope you feel better soon

L xx

Hey hun

Thankfully I finally had mine removed at 21 so don't have that problem anymore but I did have a bad cold a few weeks back and Halls Soothers were my saviour so not sure why you have been told you can't take them. My MW also told me I could take some of the the cold drinks that just have paracetamol in but my Boyo just made me some with hot Ribena and a couple of Paracetamol which helped too.

Hope you feel better soon.

thanks ladies, am def gona have some paras before I go to bed. am not keen on the tcp idea, the smell makes me gag, I'm gona gargle with some salt water before I go to bed too but if not much better tomo then I will try the dreaded tcp! I was shocked when I asked if i couldn't even take hall soothers and she said no, I thought they were just sweets that helped soothe the throat?! I just hope this clears up quick cos last time I had it my tonsils were covered in ulcers and it was just horrible!x

Sharing a soother here.

2 tablespoons honey warmed up a little, and 2 tablespoons lemon juice. The honey will coat your throat and help you get the lemon juice down. Lemon juice is a natural astringent and helps big time. It's only temporary but a very big help.

Could you go to a NHS walk in centre? Some of them are open over the weekend / bank hol - maybe they can give you antibiotics?

was gonna suggest walk in centre ours are 24hrs xx

Hi hun, could you get some soluble painkillers and gargle those? I've been told to try that pre-pregnancy when I last had Tonsilitis.

gargle with soluble paracetamols and then swallow after - will at least give you a bit of a local pain relief in your throat too.sorry you're feeling so rotten. walk-in centre sounds like a good plan. maybe try that tomorrow. :hugs: hot orange/lemon & honey is very soothing too though in the meantime.

I did a few weks back and it was horrible. I am allergic to penicillan so was prescribed a differnt antibiotic but unfortunately it didnt help and i ended up in hospital with a quinsey (sp??) where the tonsilittus had gone to an abcess. Apparently penicillan/ amoxicillan are th most efective at treating and are safe dring pregnancy.

Your meant to avoid things like halls soothers/ strepsil ets because they usually contain some kind of decongestant and they are not recommended during pregnancy.

Definately gargle soluable paracetamol and also if you dont fancy tcp you can buy the mouthwash called corsodyl and this is also quite good to gargle (its usually for treating gum infections etc but is safe to use in pregnancy and does numb the throat a little)

Hope you feel better soon.x
