Do you no the only thing i wish theyd pay more out on is my maternity pay... i worked in the same place for 2 years, mixed hours never lover than 24 but nearly up to 50 on some days, and i get a basic rate maternity... it means budgeting my whole house on bills as my OH is P/T work and P/T Uni... Hes worked since 16, and were entitled to only the bare minimum to help us live in our own home.

as i told my OH ill go without if it means bella is cared for :)

How do you know you are entitled to the grant when lo is here? Am i right in saying certain element of child tax credit? we will be getting 45 a mnth ctc so guessing we wont be able to claim it. Xx

i dont think it the fact people expect benifits when both parents are working etc.. but still why shouldnt they, me ive been working since i was 16 so has my bf and we can not claim a thing, tho people round me, infact down the road live in a private rented house, as do i, they dont pay rent, are expecting there first child, which they can claim token for i.e the milk, veg and vitimins token and the guy is always sat on the front smoking as is his preg gf (what they do is none of my busness just showing an example). i live in private rented (couldnt get council as they told me and have told me bro n his gf they are for families only) and the waiting list is huge so fair dues, i pay my rent, council tax, have 2 cats and a dog (my choice) and yes i have everything for my baby and we do struggle, but i make sure every last bill of mine is payed before i even go for a coffee with friends, so after ive had my baby, im going to put forward for the grant as i know then i qualify, and yes some people may say why, but why should people who dont work be able to claim everything, and yes i know in this day and age its very hard to get a job as theres not many out there, this isnt about that and if u cant find a job then fair enough. xxxx

IF I COME ACROSS AS BEING BITCHY IM REALLY NOT TRYING TO BE AT ALL xx

if you're entitled then yes, you def should claim away but i hate when people whinge about not qualifying for benefits

also just a thought, you say about hating people whinging for not qualifying for benefits... but you thanked a posters comment about the grant being everyone and that its unfair that everyone doesnt get it working or not working......

surely thats whinging about not qualifying for a benefit aswell

we are entitled to approx jist over 45 per month so does this mean we lose out on the maternity grant by 3 pound. Lol. Xx

So if you are awarded more than £548 a year you are entitled to the SSMG when baby is between 0-12weeks. This is approx £45 a month / £10 a week.

An income low enough to get Working Tax Credits as a couple will be low enough (by far) to be granted over £548 a year.

Of course this only applies to a first baby.

J/W what do you spend it on once baby is already here? surely you already have all the major bits (cot, some sort of pram, carseat etc)?

Yes if thats correct. Which sucks.

How have you calculated your Child Tax Credit entitlement. Have you put in an adjustment for lower wages this year and the fact you will be on SMP for x weeks. When Calculating Tax Credits the first £100 of SMP is not counted.

With mine for DD I used my credit card to the value of £500 before LO was born on baby items and paid it off when I got the grant.

I agree apply again when your LO has arrived and until by second hand. Thats what we have been doing and have got some great deals.

Please dont judge all people on benefits though ladies. My OH recently got made redundant and we have had to claim JSA until he finds a new job. I am very aware that people look at me, pregnant with my second and think 'oh, another scrouging young couple on benefits' but its not like that at all, he was working when I fell pregnant. In this economic climate some people have not had a choice!

£500 is alot of money to anyone... But you can buy cotbeds second hand on ebay cheap then just need a new mattress witch can be picked up cheap aswell and will last from NB till they are what 3/4years old?

I would be allowed this grant if I was on my first child due to getting higher rate but hey ho that is life and we have everything we need for the baby

yea it doesnt make any difference to what we are entitled to. Surely 3 pound over the year cant make it so not get the 500, ridiculous! xx

I have no problem with those people who work then have babies and then find themselves in difficult times - this can't be planned - my real big problem is those who choose to have babies knowing that they can't afford them - sorry that your OH got made redundant - and yes it is the economic climate - hopefully things will pick up soon for you xxxxxx
