O/T Grammar pet peeve!

These threads never go down well, and for good reason.

Maybe some people have dyslexia? Never went to school? Have learning problems? OR maybe people just come on here for relaxed chat and don't go over every single post they make to see if they spelt something wrong?

Be grateful you can 'spell' and don't make a mockery of those who can't - sometimes through no fault of their own.

I can't speak for anyone else, but I certainly am not making a mockery of those that cannot spell!

And this site flags up errors as you type them, so you'd see them instantly rather than having to go through your posts to check.

And, one of my very good friends is dyslexic with very poor results from mainstream education and he's an accomplished writer! I think you're doing those with dyslexia a great disservice by assuming it results in poor grammar and spelling.. It can, but many go to great lengths to overcome the barriers and write far better than those that simply cannot be arsed.

I've found it only flags up the error for so long and then goes, on my laptop my A is quite temperamental and the majority of the time I have to go back and put the missing A's in, but noticed they're not always underlined after so long

Holy bananas!

I posted what I thought was an innocent thread, went to bed, and woke up to find a five page long hate train!

Ladies, let me be the first to say I never intended to strike such a nerve.

I do not think my thread should be locked either though. People post off topic threads ALL of the time and just because someone doesn't like mine doesn't mean it needs to be locked. :(

I'm also a tad offended that someone said I probably "knew" I was going to upset people when I posted this. I most certainly didn't. I'm actually a really nice and caring person. My goal isn't to piss people off on the internet. I swear.

Maybe I should give a little back story on where my pet peeve originated from and that will make it a little less offensive. Let me start by saying it was never targeted at people with learning disabilities. What kind of asshole would I be if I started poking fun at people who truly can not help it?

I've never been anywhere other than the states so I am basing this off of my own southern upbringing. I grew up in a completely white trash environment. Welfare, alcohol, slums, etc. My mother and all of the people she associated with were that "I'm gunna whoop some ass up in hurr if you don't get me muh damn beer" type of people. Total trash, working the system. Those types of people are uneducated because they CHOOSE to be. I went to a public school and took advantage of the education offered to me. I rose above that shit hole of a life.

Ever since childhood I have had a problem with people who can't string a proper sentence together. It's more the sentences that I gave examples of that piss me off. The spelling is completely secondary. I misspell words as well. But I'm sorry, "We was" instead of "We were" will always get under my skin. If that makes me some evil wench that is destroying the souls of innocent dyslexic people, then so be it. That was never my intention.

*sigh*

This was so not how I wanted to start my morning. Not sure I deserved to be so criticized for having ONE pet peeve......

Once again, let's just let this die. I hope you ladies know, I never purposefully meant to hurt feelings.

OP - sorry you feel like you have come under a personal attack here. Unfortunately, this type of thread usually causes offence. Since you haven't been a member long, you weren't to know this, so it is a touch unfair to accuse you of doing it intentionally.

However, to prevent a raging debate in what is already an area full of hormones, perhaps having it moved to the discussion and debate area/having it locked is the best idea

Hiya
I don't think your thread has made you out to be "some evil wrench" hun, reading what you say here im sure it was written out of complete innocence, but it's one of those subjects i think where maybe giving a second thought to wouldnt go amiss. I've belonged to many forums where i have put my 'foot in it', simply because i didn't think, even now i can be half way through writing a post and then decide to scrap it altogether. We live in a world (or in this country at least) of freedom of speech, so we're all able to voice our views, but sometimes i think we have to except that not everyone will see things in exactly the same way.:flower:

I will agree on that!
I have a few cousins who purposely write like that, OK they may be 14 and 15 but what the hell? The write like they can't spell yet you say 'what do you even mean' and up it pops written perfectly
It really irritates me when people misspell when you know they can actually spell correctly

Thanks. If someone wants to lock this thread they most certainly can.

I really just don't want people to think I'm some sort of hateful person picking on dyslexic people. :dohh:

Trust me, I NEVER would have posted anything had I known the consequences. I would have kept my damn annoyances to myself.:flower:

It's text talk that annoys me. I just do not get it! Despite being a youngen myself I find it hard to read stuff like "misses his bby gyal soooo mch i hoe ur ok wid me bby and i ned ur adrees 2 sd ur letta bby plz i love u dont eva leave me " (an extract from a friends FB). That's a tame one!

If there's a genuine reason behind not being able to type properly then fair enough but when it's down to sheer lazyness it's silly.

Blimey, sounds just like an ex of mine :haha::winkwink:

I get very amused trying to work out what he's talking about :haha: They all pretty much say the same though. "Please don't leave me..." Blah blah blah etc...

Hey Ladies,

Just wanted to say I dont think theres anything wrong with this thread at all and its perfectly fine to have this as a pet peeve

Just wanted to say however that sometimes something is typed or said the way its pronounced depending on whereever the poster ails from and also depending on their accent  I am a yorkshire girl and we are commonly known for our slang speaking tongue for no other reason than because of where we are born/the part of the UK we live in. Speaking for myself here I often find myself communicating as if I am talking to a fellow Yorkshire person and will use slang for no other reason than because if I started talking `oxford` it wouldnt be understand as well :dohh: I forget to revert into `oxford` so to speak when speaking to someone who is not from where I ail simply because this is my natural tongue!

People always say text talk is so lazy but I think of it the opposite way. The few times I've tried to be "hip with the kids" it did my head in trying to spell everything out. It bugs me that my MIL uses text speak in her texts. I still think predictive text is 10x easier!!

That's all the really bugs me though. My grammer/spelling/puncuation is horrid. So forgive me all you grammer nazi's if you read my posts :p

This is way off topic, but then again, it's my off topic thread to begin with so what the hell! (See I mess up too, that sentence structure was horrid!)

Anywho, I just wanted to say I love the name Phoebe Linn. :D

Don't let it ruin your morning! I don't think anyone was totally offended by the thread, people were just expressing their views on it - obviously everyone thinks differently. Don't take it to heart x

:hugs:
I'm the type of person that if it doesn't effect me personally why really dwell on it. But you were just saying what was on your mind, sometimes people take it the wrong way but i really don't care how some one types lol! No harm intended hun were all pregnant and here for the same reasons to talk and discuss.

Oh honey, please don't be upset. Definately not a thread followed by pages of hate and I'm sorry if some our responses came across like that. One or two off key comments but that's bound to happen. I completely get your peeve! Seriously, my office often tell me to stop correcting their work. Some people just get upset easily and like it's been said, typing something and saying it in real life can come across differently so pepple sometimes misinterpret the feeling behind a post.

Thanks guys. I feel better now. :)

Stupid hormones make me take things to heart sometimes.

I honestly dont think the thread was meant to offend. I'm not the best speller and do type fast and just hit post without reading it back to myself. We have to remember that we are all from different countries areas and have different accents. Im sure my black country accent comes out in my typing sometimes and some people have even mentioned it and don't understand some of the words i use.
x
