Oh no, I ate...

I do think it's important to avoid at risk food when pregnant because the risk of literia is 20 times higher when you're pregnant. Having said that, it is still a VERY small risk. If you've eaten 'high risk' foods (as I did, by accident!) you really will almost certainly be fine, but sometimes in threads like these, people say it's not a problem to eat what you like and I wonder if maybe they don't realise how much more at risk we are when we're pregnant. I hope I'm not offending anyone writing this, or making anyone more worried, but I just wanted to make it clear that the risk is not the same for us as for 'normal' healthy people so it's just worth baring that in mind. I hope I phrased that OK?

I agree. The chances are small, that;s why lots of people say 'I ate it and I was fine' but the risk is there and even if that risk is tiny, the consequences are huge. I couldn't live with myself if I ate something like soft cheese and got listeria and my baby died as a result, it's only 40 weeks to go without.

My mom ate everything while she was pregnant (obviously I am fine), and thinks I am crazy for all the things I am avoiding, but like some people have said, it only takes once. One person could eat it everyday and be fine, and another eat it once and get sick and have their baby die.

But I'm sure you are fine because I would think if there was something wrong then you would have been sick already. I do know that you shouldn't worry about something that you already did, because stressing isn't good for the baby! :)

I haven't really changed anything that I eat! I've had lots of deli meat. I don't drink, I don't smoke, I think I'm doing pretty good! lol.... You and baby will be fine :)

Brieanna- there were no signs or symptoms that my friend has listeria.

MixxFox, may I ask how the listeria manifested itself? Was your friend receiving adequate prenatal care? I'm not trying to ask insensitive questions but I am interested in finding out how a baby can survive until 38wks before being affected by listeria. Was she receiving regular ultrasounds? I know that at my prenatal appointments, even if I don't have an ultrasound the doc uses a doppler to listen to the heart beat each time. Was the baby alive until delivery? Again sorry for the graphic questions I'm just trying to understand how listeria actually affects the baby.

She was receiving care. Same place I'm going actually. She had started her weekly appointments. Monday at 38 weeks she went in and they didn't check her to see if she was dialated although she asked. They used a doppler to listen to the heart beat all was good. Wednesday at 2AM she was having contractions close enough together to head to the hospital. She said they were VERY intense. She got to the hospital at 3:30 am and they tried to locate the heartbeat and it was gone. They did an ultra sound which showed that the baby had passed. They had an autopsy done which showed the listeria infection which weakened the umbilical chord. Her contractions separated it from the baby and essentially on the way to the hospital her baby died.

ooo i never heard of that! i am a vege so this may be why - saying that tho you meat eater ladies didnt know wha it was either! i thought i was being dumb not know hehe!

you should be fine! i have eaten things purely by accident and afterwards googled it and thought omg i shouldnt of had that!

and that was early on in pregnancy! haha

Listeria has really mild symptoms that you may not even know about. I think they are mild flu like symptoms. Thats is absolutely tragic for your friend. I have no idea how on earth she came to terms with it. The thing is, she must have felt so awful, going through everything she did or didnt do. Just so sad and every mothers nightmare.

She has had a rough time dealing with it and is doing pretty good with counseling. Her and I talk about her little girl often. She does so great with not blaming herself- she more blames the midwife for not checking her when she asked. If she had been checked and found to be dilated she would ahve stayed at her mom's house less than 10 minutes from the hospital instead of going home almost 2 hours from the hospital.
The whole situation is very sad and there is really nothing that could have been done about it. She's strong and doing well these days and just completely loves to talk about her little girl. She has such an amazing support system in her family and friends and at 19 is handling it better than I could ever imagine.
I know that the risk of listeria is still small but it's not worth the risk to me- feels like I would be slapping her in the face if I continued to eat foods that could cause it.

She seems really strong. I have no idea where she found that strength from, many would just crumble. Really hope things work out for her in the future. x
