So is anyone else following this old tradition of having something old, new, borrowed and blue on their wedding day?

and for brides already - what did you have?

i'm not sure where it comes from, but i take it is one of though's old wives tales, but hey, i like it!

so, so far mine will be,

old - my nan's rings
new - my dress
blue - going to wear a blue garter under my dress ;) as it wont go with the pink theme colours
borrowed - completely stuck!!! been trying to think and have come up with bugger all :dohh:

i'm having this. i have:

Old: My mum's vivienne westwood pearl necklace
New: Dress
Borrowed: My maid of honour's veil
Blue: Garter with a little pocket for a sixpence as i don't fancy walking round with one in my shoe

everyone forgets about the sixpence.

old: ??
new: dress
borrowed: ??
blue: my engagement ring

omg!!! how could i have forgotten about this!!! im gonna get thinking lol and btw why the sixpence? i take it its a good luck thing, i havent heard of that before

Old- Black and red garter my mum got a joke present for her wedding 34 years earlier
New- My dress ofc :D
Borrowed- My mums pearls
Blue- bracelet

Traditionally, borrowed used to be some jewellery from a woman on your side of the family. Women would only receive jewellery as a gift from their husbands, so a woman wearing jewellery was obviously a married woman.

Just a bit of useless history for you x

I can't remember what my something old was, my something new was my dress, my borrowed again I can't remember, my blue was a blue ribbon around my flowers.

Old: a bracelet that has my name on it that my mum gave me when i was 4 (need it resized)
New: the dress
Borrowed: hoping one of my nans has a pearl necklace i can borrow
Blue: garter

x

No one ever remembers this rhyme properly!!

Something old
something new
something borrowed
something blue

Lucky is the bride
with a sixpence in her shoe

No point in doing the above if you don't get a sixpence for your shoe

Wouldent that just irritate you, walking round with a coin in your shoe?

Nope, depending on the shoe type you can have it in the toe of your shoe if its a point, or tape it down on the arch so your foot doesn't even touch it :)

did not even know that last part of the rhyme!

It's also lucky if a bride "bumps into" a chimney sweep and he gives her the 6pense for her shoe on the way to the Church, which is why brides used to walk to Church, to increase their chanses of meeting a chimneysweep.

Im gonna need pointed shoes then, iv got flat feet!

I had
Old: diamond earrings - originally belonged to my granfather's grandmother
New: dress, veil, shows, tiara etc etc lol!
Borrowed: A brooch of my mum's that I pinned to my bouquet
Blue: I sewed a blue ribbon into my underwear

You must have the sixpence too! I had one of my mum's old ones from the year of her birth - I put it right into the toe of my shoe, and took it out after the ceremony. You can buy them from any wedding shop, or ebay :)

I remember having a dilema over this..I can't make decisions!

Old: Cotton hankerchief tucked in to my bra - my mum had it as a little girl.
New: Gina Shoes
Borrowed: My mum's pearl necklace and earrings
Blue: Garter with a little blue bow on.

Yeah, not a lot of people do. :) I try and tell all my brides. You can get a sixpence on some cards in cards shops, or on ebay.

I had:

Old: tiara. It was made of silk flowers and has been worn by every woman getting married in my family for the last 70 years, and it will be passed to Niamh when she gets married :)

New: Dress

Borrowed: my pearls and diamond bracelet

Blue: garter

Gotta have the sixpence ... that may well be my something old too
