Hi All

I thought I had my leave all tied up when I had a informal discussion with my boss about home working for 6 months. He has now completly changed tact and looks like ill be going down the statutory maternity route.

I feel like ive been a bit stung as it came as a bit of a shock but I do know the company are making cuts and redundancys etc so can see why he may have changed his mind.

So now i'm working on the basis as whether I should take 6 months OML or 12 Months SML. The reason I'd rather take 6 months is due to our finances and the fact I would walk back to my same job and money (OH will look after baby) If i went for 12 months we would struggle quite alot.

I have to notify my employer by 2nd June of my start date (which I want to be 27th July - I'm due 13th Sept)

I guess my main question to you all is ....Do I tell my employer prior to taking my leave that I intend on returning in January 2013 (6 months leave) or do I let them assume im taking the full year and write to them giving 8 weeks notice (in November) that I want to return in Janaury.

Also can you make a flexiable working request after 6 months mat leave? (we may decide I only want to work 3 days)

I'm now also worried I may be on the hit list for redundancys or a change in job role if i take longer than the 6 months. I earn good money as I stand enough to support our family and dont want to risk loosing that...my OH is more than happy to be a SAHD and I currently work 4 days a week from 7.30-2pm.

Thanks Ladies, its a minefield all this maternity lark.

Keep your options open and tell them 12 months. You can make a flexible working request now, if they decline you can make another application in 12 months time.

Thanks, not going to make a flexible working request until I'm on leave and see what our situation is. If I give 8 weeks notice I can go back anytime can't I? Xx
