We own our house. I got my first mortgage when I was 19, my dh owned a flat with his ex but split up & then took on his dad's council tenancy after he died. When I sold my own house we bought this house together & surrendered the council house.
I really believe that council and housing association is fantastic but should your financial situation improve, surrendering your council property and buying your own house is best. You have something to leave to your children and people who are not in a position to buy get a council property quicker. I know too many people who are sitting in council properties who could afford to buy their own house but prefer the security of council to deal with boilers, repairs etc. I also know far too many people who are waiting on appropriate council properties and are in B&B's until one comes up
