own or rent?

we rent. would like to own but can't afford to buy a three bedroom in the part of London we live so would have to move to do that, and right now the location is too convenient!

We own our house. I got my first mortgage when I was 19, my dh owned a flat with his ex but split up & then took on his dad's council tenancy after he died. When I sold my own house we bought this house together & surrendered the council house.

I really believe that council and housing association is fantastic but should your financial situation improve, surrendering your council property and buying your own house is best. You have something to leave to your children and people who are not in a position to buy get a council property quicker. I know too many people who are sitting in council properties who could afford to buy their own house but prefer the security of council to deal with boilers, repairs etc. I also know far too many people who are waiting on appropriate council properties and are in B&B's until one comes up :-(

We rent but really want to buy, we have the deposit but need to find a suitable property where we are....its hard as we live really rural & most houses that come up for sale are old farmhouses which are badly constructed & very cold! We are toying with the idea of buying a site & building our own house!

Rent privately, a 3 bedroomed detached house. Managed by a property company who only ever contact me - if I've contacted them - bliss! I love the freedom of renting - within 1 month I can move house.

I have enough money to buy, and I will eventually, in fact I am looking into Buy to Let properties instead. But it's more important for me at the minute to use my savings for nice things for house to settle me, and baby when it arrives. And I use the money for holidays & new car every 2 years.

We rent currently, realistically have about £40000 to save before we could afford to buy the same house! *sigh*

We own a house but leaseholders so that includes paying ground rent/service charge on top of our mortgage

We rent ours privately but are looking for something to buy, we just haven't found anything we love yet.

Both- shared ownership with housing association, only way to afford a property at the time, would love to own a property outright... I'll keep on dreaming...

We own ours. Originally my OH bought it as shared ownership, 80/20 but now we own it out right.

We rent from council. Would love to own our own home but don't think we'll ever be able to afford it.

I agree with this. It is exactly what we have done. Our finacial position changed and our need wasn't so great (for social housing) so we handed it back and bought our own property. I like to think that a family in real need is now living in a home they can feel secure in :flower:

We own our-or will do once we pay the mortgage off in about 20 years!

xxx

Both, I'm greedy :) I live in a privately rented flat in Scotland, but own a house in England. It was on the market for a year but didn't sell, so we're stuck with it :growlmad:
