Anna how do you put the border around your pictures id love to be able to do that it looks so professional!

Im chuffed that ive had good comments makes you feel better about what you've taken so thank you. Looks like ill be getting some props for my picture taking lol. My aunts going to be chuffed with the pictures of the bouquet its a nice reminder of her bouquets instead of the normal full on shots although i did take a few they didnt come out as well as those. I can see myself getting really addicted to this lol.

yes its always a boost to recieve good comments on your pictures also handy when you get constructive criticism to....i love advice and tips on how to improve my work :) my OH is sittting next to me editing a photo he just took and it looks great...puts mine to shame  yes the position in which you took your pictures were really nice....very refreshing to see it from a different angle :)

Emma, I think you and everyone on here not only loves taking photos, but has a talent for it as well.

Emma, the D40 works with non-AF-S lenses too, but you simply would have to do all your focusing manually and have to trust only your eye to tell you that you have the part of the image in focus that you want to have. It's good to know as you may find you like using manual focus all the time (I do for lots of things) and may therefore find a bargain on an older lens. As I found on another site: "While the D40 can use almost any Nikon F-mount lens, it will only support autofocus on AF-S and AF-I lenses". This website shows you the lenses by all manufacturers that will work and autofocus on the D40: https://www.d40-lenses.com/

Another tip: avoid using the B&W mode on your camera; take the shot in colour, then convert it in Photoshop. You not only get a better result thast way, you also get 2 images for the price of 1 since you still have the original colour version.

Thanks Emma. Putting a border around an image the way I do it is simple; it's the only trick I know LOL I use Photoshop Elements 6 to do mine, but I think it's the same in Photoshop itself, too. First, I resize my image (and Save As with a different filename, so as not to save over my original file! I've made THAT mistake bedore :dohh: ) to something like 800 pixels on the longest side, using Image > Resize > Image Size, changing the measurement in the drop-down menu to Pixels. Then to make the frame, I go to Image > Resize > Canvas Size and again change the measyrement in the drop-down menu to Pixels. I then make a thin border of about 5 pixels in both height and width, choosing the colour I want from the drop-down menu at the bottom (I stick to white or black). I then make the wide border where I can input the text by repeating the same steps, but choosing something like 100 pixels for both width and height, choosing the opposite colour to whatever I used for the thin border. I then add text if desired. :)

I SO want a few minutes to myself to get out into my back garden with my macro lens on the camera...

Chel27 thank you :) i cant wait to show my aunt ive messaged her telling her already lol.

Anna that is so helpful thank you so much. I best get learning how to do it manually then lol. My friend lastnight advised me to take all the pictures in colour and then turn them black and white on photoshop too lastnight just after i read your post lol. I gave it a go and loved the result. I played about with the colours. What about pictures in sepia? How do i do those? Ill give the frames ago inabit.

Anna that picture is amazing. Your so good!

I was trying to reply lastnight but fell asleep on the settee lol.

Close still life pic (was just a pic of a button hole that I had made in all truth, I like to keep pictures of all the crafty things that I do)

https://i220.photobucket.com/albums/dd316/foxxymynx/crafts/DSCF1119.jpg

Daylight bulb and wrapping paper for the background. I blutack the wrapping paper to the wall and lay it aross the table and up the wall. Use the daylight bulb instead of flash (makes diamonte sparkle too as well as casting a nice shadow). I have black wrapping paper from clintons, so that one side is black and one is white, so that it's versatile.

That picture is great mynxie! Great tips there to thanks.

Although i have to say the camera wouldnt get as close as id have liked on the flowers! Gutted.

I bought screw on filters off ebay for my macros - they were only about £15 for the set of 4 :winkwink:

lovely pics of Braden hun :hugs:

neecee - different filters do different things, the ones i linked to (above)are magnifying filters and change the regular "kit lens" to one with macro capabities. A macro lens will always be preferable, but the filters do the job well enough for me (til I have the pennies saved for a new lens at least!)

Lovely photos of Braden, Callie.

Close-up filters, like Debs said, are a cheap and cheerful way to get in closer to a subject using your basic lens. I have a dedicated macro lens to use with my Nikons which is preferable but pricey, but I have a set of close-up filters to use with my Samsung DSLR as I don't use that camera enough to warrant spending £300 on a lens for it.

I highly recommend close up filters if you only see yourself doing macro photography occasionally, or if it's new to you and you want to give it a try to see if you like it. For the price they're a brilliant bit of kit, and well worth having.

Wow thanks for the tip tiggertea :) will they fit my nikon d40 if so ill be buying some of those now lol. I just went out in the garden again and it wouldnt focus on what i wanted :( Also ive got dust in there somewhere i can see it in the view finder but its not coming out in the pictures :(

and im really shite on photoshop cant do the border for my life lol. Its really hard to concentrate with two kids around so im goin to tackle it again later on. Thanks for all these tips :)

Branden is gorgeous hun!!!

You get em in different sizes, the kit lens on my canon is 58mm filter size, I'm assuming the nikons are the same. maybe Anna can help you with that one!

You just need to look at your lens for the filter thread size... I think it's 55mm or 58mm. Then, as Debs said, you just buy the size to match. They will work brilliantly on your D40 Emma!
