I got a letter this morning from my workplace saying that they have decided to give everyone a PRP bonus after all as they haven't been hit by the financial crisis too hard! (we would normally have got it in April but they said they weren't going to do it due to the financial crisis) Anyhoo, as of the end of June, I get an extra £300 this month!!!!! That Sony camera is MINE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!:wohoo::wohoo::wohoo:

Im wanting to buy my 1st SLR camera but i have no idea which 1 i should get. Can anyone recommend a lower end 1 as i dont want to spend alot until i learn all the settings properly. Im wanting to spend no more than £250 if possible. I will be using it mainly for taking photos of my little girl and macro photos of flowers and bugs.

Also can i buy lenses that fit on most SLR cameras, rather than just 1 type like say just nikon? Where is the best place to buy lenses from?

Ive been into photography for 5 years now and have 3 fuji cameras, 1 is a compact and the other 2 are bridge cameras, so im not a beginner but dont want to spend alot on an SLR until i have got the hang of 1 properly and know how to use it with all the different lenses.

Thanx
Anna

Hiya, I'm currently using a fuji S5700 bridge camera but I'm about to upgrade to a Sony A200

A few of the girls on here have recommended buying from warehouseexpress.com as they have excellent service and fast delivery.

Thanx Neecee, the Sony A200 looks great but a bit out of my price range. Im hoping to get 1 for as cheap as possible to start with and upgrade later. Iv been looking on ebay as i dont mind buying a 2nd hand 1 but i have no clue which 1 to go for or what lenses i would need. Iv seen people on here say the nikon D40 is a good 1 to start with?

hey angelanna! welcome to the group :D

i would advise you to beware of things going TOO cheap on ebay.... it can either be a scam or the camera could be coming to the end of it's working life. now, i'm not saying EVERYTHING's going to be a con but ask lots of questions before sinking your money into it. a genuine seller will be happy to answer them all! :D

p.s. a d40 is a great starter camera, although i'm a canon freak so can't give you any more info

Excellent news Neecee.

Angelanna ive got a D40 and love it. Im finding the lenses are on the dear side though as you need the af-s lenses otherwise you dont have auto focus other than that its brill.

Thanx tiggertea, Yer i know what you mean about not going for the cheapest, i wouldnt want to be conned or anything like that. I dont mind what make it is weather its nikon or canon or any of the other makes, i just want to make sure i buy a good 1. Do you think its possible for me to get 1 for £250 or less?

emma_27 do you have to buy nikon lenses? is there not cheaper ones that you can buy that fit most cameras? Iv seen prices of lenses and thats what puts me off buying an SLR as my cameras iv got now have cost alot less than the prices they want for lenses.

Even if you buy a lens by another manufacturer for your SLR (ie. a Sigma lens for a Nikon camera) it still can only be used on that particular brand of camera. Each brand has its own lens fitting, so lenses don't tend to be interchangeable between brands of camera - 3rd party lens manufacturers like Sigma and Tamron sell their lenses with different fits depending on the brand of camera they are to be used with.

3rd party lenses do often end up cheaper than the manufacturer's own though... but they still can only be used with the brand of camera they were purchased for.

I would say it's possible to find one for around that, but i would wait an extra couple of months to save of the extra for a new one.... that's just me though :D i like to know exactly what i'm getting and have warranty if anything isn't quite right. there were packages for the sony a200 starting at around £300 on warehouseexpress.com.

the canon and nikon are a bit more expensive

Thanx AnnaBanana9, i was hoping that they would be able to be used on different brands of cameras just incase i buy a nikon then when i upgrade i buy a canon but i suppose i was being a bit hopeful.

i'll give the advice i always do.... have a hold of everything available and see which feels right for you.... all the brands are pretty similar in what they can do, but you'll not be able to make the most of it unless you're comfortable holding the camera :D then save like crazy for the one you decide you like most.

Yer i know what you mean about wanting to buy new tiggertea so that you know you are getting a good working camera. I will have the money to buy a new 1 but was hoping to buy a cheap 1 until i learn how to use an SLR then upgrade but thinking about it i think i might aswell go straight to the upgrade rather than buying 2 cameras. Is there much difference to using an SLR than there is using a bridge camera like the fuji s8000fd? I know the difference is the lenses but is there anything apart from that?
Sorry for all the questions, i just want to make the right choice and spend my money wisely

i can't help with that one - i went straight to my dslr from a compact  i know some of the ladies (and gent) may be able to help though :D

I wish i had gone straight to an SLR after my 1st bridge camera but they confuse me with all the different types of lenses and im still learning all the different setting to take pics manually. Plus the prices are alot higher than bridge cameras so havnt been able to afford 1 until now, plus im more into photography and know alot more about it. I think im addicted to upgrading cameras but i know this will be the last camera so id love to get a really good 1

This really cool place we went to called ''Camera Obscura'' Its all about trick photography, illusions and fun things like that. Some of it was amazing!

We were standing in this room, and we had to find the door, it was just all mirrors. So freaky:

This again was mirrors. It was called ''The ladder to Austrailia'' Can you believe there were only actually 4 lights in there? Looks so real eh?

This was freaky, it was a multi glazed glass which when you sat opposite someone merged your face into thei body, so here i am with my dads head! LOL

This really freaked me out. It was a mirrored 3d effect thing which allowed you to shake your own hand, so i got creative :p
