*Please Read* Obstetric Cholestasis

OC was confirmed on Monday. ALT's 88, Bile Acids 33.

First symptom for me was really dark urine despite drinking about 3litres of water a day. The itching was fairly mild until wednesday so I expect my levels are rising fairly quickly which is what happened with Chloe. Last blood test the day for Chloe was born was ALT 280, BA 102

I got this with my daughter at 32 weeks so to be honest I was expecting it a lot earlier. I am booked in for a c-section next wednesday when I will be 37+1. It is policy at my hospital to induce/c-section between 37-38 weeks for OC but becasue I am also having reduced movemtents they are doing it as soon as they can.

Happy to answer questions if anyone has any.

Girls
I'm itching like crazy all over but not on my
hands or feet. My urine smells so so strong and weird and it's not coming up that I have a water infection or anything. Feels like prickly heat or pinches all on my arms and legs and back. Going to doc tomorrow. Any advice??

Just wondering if the itching has to just be palms of hands? I have itching from what I think is dermatitis on the backs of my hands and it literally wakes me up at night it's so bad. Since I have a history of eczema from soap on my hands I don't think it really is OC, but of course I'm feeling paranoid because it's my first pregnancy and I wouldn't want the dermatitis to be masking something else!

I hope you ladies don't mind me jumping in here (I'm officially in the 2nd tri).

I posted in gestational complications before I found this thread - does anyone know if the NHS routinely repeat the LFT if the first results are actually normal?

I have been very itchy, super tired and constantly hot the last few weeks (despite being in europe before that so weather hotter than UK). I thought it was normal for pg but when I mentioned it to the midwife she ran a LFT for OC.

I just got a call asking me to repeat the bloods (1 week after the first) but (annoyingly) the lady I spoke to didn't have my first results. Is there a chance my results were normal and they're just being prudent? I read online sometimes they repeat the bloods as a caution because the itching starts before the elevated LFT shows.

Yes I would say that they Are being cautious they usually take one set of bloods then another in a week to see if they have risen x

I've just been diagnosed with this. Bile levels were at 62!

Looking at induction next Saturday at 37 weeks. On Meds to control it.

Only two symptoms I had was unbearable itching (ESP hands and feet) and really dark orange urine (even though I was drinking 2 litres of water a day)

Going to get my results on Friday, wish me luck!

Got blood drawn for this on Tuesday. Hoping my itching is just due to my hair growing in and sweat but beginning to wonder if maybe this is my issue. My urine is normal straw colored but I'm constantly itchy (mainly my legs but its all over too...) and I'm constantly wanting ICE cold water because I'm hot (but then again I live in Florida) my maternal fetal specialist said I should get my results by Monday or Tuesday and if I don't hear from the office I need to call...keeping fingers crossed its not OC but so many signs are pointing to it :(

Being induced Monday 13th at 10.30. I'll be 37+2 xx

Hope you are ok and baby has arrived safely x x

So I had my LFT repeated, my bile acids were still normal but my ALT had risen fron 42 up to 48.

We are repeating them again next week (which will be 2 1/2 weeks after the 2nd test).

The itching isn't too bad as long as I stay cool (which is hard as i'm always hot and thirsty right now).

The Dr (Uk NHS) has suggested 4 steroid shots to mature babies lungs (I'm 24 weeks pg).......this seems a little OTT to me at this stage :( I've read most people only have 2 shots and only then once they go into pre-term labour. I've also read the shots only last 2 weeks in any case.
Has anyone else had this suggested?

Well all my levels were normal so my intense itching is just from being overheated and (on my legs) from my leg hair growing back after shaving...unfortunately I can't shave daily or I will end up with razor burn and I don't know which is worse :/ so I am happy I don't have cholestasis BUT now what? How the heck do I end this horrid itching?

Been to see the DR today due to stupid amount of itching. Mention OC but he never even seemed interested. I got given some cream and some shower cream to ease the itching and pain when showering.
Hoping that it isnt OC but is there any over clear signs to look for apart from the itching? Keep waking through the night too due to been to hot.

I see the midwife next week so will mention it to her if it hasnt eased.

Excessively hot, pale coloured stools, dark coloured urine, tiredness, no rash - can you ring your midwife? I bypassed GP as they never seem familiar with pregnancy related stuff. Went into day unit instead after speaking to midwife n got blood tests etc done there. X

Agree with pinkandfluffy - definitely push to get bloods done x

Gutted. I had OC in my last pregnancy.

As a result I have been on the look out for symptoms this time around. When I started itching I tried to put it down to paranoia. But, over the last few days it has gotten almost unbareable. I already have blood tests booked for Thursday, and they tested early on at 22 weeks so they have a base to work from, but there is no mistaking this itch :(

I want to cry and it hasn't even been diagnosed yet.

I had mine done yesterday. Explained to the midwife that my veins are very small and very hard to get up to get blood and they have to use a baby needle. Hacked at my arm with biggest needle I've ever seen! She never seemed bothered about my itch until she called day unit and the told her I had to have them rushed through. Waiting on the call today but no call yet so hopefully that's good.

I've been diagnosed with OC, after 3 miserable weeks of itching, to the point of bleeding, all over my feet and hands. I got Urso 500mg per day, but have no relief - does anyone know how long it takes (if at all) to get any relief. It's only thanks to this thread that I persevered, as I wouldn't have known about OC.

I'm taking the acid but I have to take 6x250mg a day so 1500mg. My levels have started to drop but the itching hasn't changed.
