I was wondering if powdered milk is more filling than breast milk or the ready-made milks?

I was combination feeding with expressed breast milk and the aptamil ready made milk and at 4 weeks old, bubs was drinking up to 150mls per feed, every 3 hours.

Now that I am cutting back the expressing in effort to dry up my milk supply, this week I have switched to Aptamil powdered milk, as it is cheaper than the ready-made milks. I have noticed bubs (5 weeks old) has decreased his feeds - now drinking on average 100 mls per feed.

Is this normal - is the powered milk more filling than the other???

Myles is on cartons as he hates the powdered stuff, the cartons are definitely thicker or creamer consistency. When i tried him on the powered stuff he eat much less and woke up more!

Formula is meant to fill them up for longer than BM because it's not as easy to digest. I've never noticed a difference between how filling the cartons and powder seem to be though - although the carton stuff does look thicker.

At 5 weeks, I suspect you've just finished the first growth spurt, and that would account for the drop.

Thanks...

But it isn't a growth spurt and is definitely to do with the type of milks. For a few random feeds, I will occassionally still give him breast milk or carton and he will still eat the full 150 mls, however I can't seem to get him to take any more than 100mls of the powdered stuff. It is frustrating because he wakes up every 3 hours on the dot...I want him to take more so he will sleep a little longer between occasionally.

I actually thought the powdered stuff was thicker consistency. lol.

Last week I was worried because he was drinking what I thought was too much for his age...now I switch to powder and he won't drink enough!!! hehehe.

I really hope we don't have to do carton milk only...they are twice the price of the powder.

i have never noticed a diff between powder & ready made - i used a combination with the last 2, but Lana is only on ready made - my preference not hers lol

i cant really say, it might be, but formula does help with weight gain, thats proven

Thats only true if there is a problem with breastfeeding. Breastmilk has a higher fat/calorie content than formula...beside the point but....

Anyway, Freddie would take less formula than he would EBM. He was only given formula for a few days but he only took 1/2 to 3/4 the amount of formula as EBM at each feed but didnt go longer between feeds with formula, he went pretty much exactly the same length of time. Because of that his dad keeps cartoned ready made instead of powder just incase the EBM runs out as the couple of times we used that he drank almost the same amount as he did EBM.

We are experimenting and mixing up the feeds between ready-made carton and powdered formula...and he is still doing it!!!!

Is drinking up to (and sometimes over) 150 mls of Aptimal ready made carton...

BUT will only take 90 to 100 mls of Aptimal Powdered Formula.

If no one else has experienced this..then I assume it isn't normal??!! Powdered must NOT be more filling...maybe he doesn't like the powdered stuff???

like i said before i had this problem with Myles, he justs hates the powdered stuff. The cartons are slightly sweeter due to the heating processes that the powder doesn't go through. I emailed Aptamil and asked why LO was behaving this way and that is what the reply said. As ingredients go they are the same other than the preservative in the cartons.

Thats the same answer we got when we asked a formula representative. Also someone said that if you add the powder too hot or too cold it can make it more grainy so that might be the reason too :dohh:

I definitely think formula is more filling. Max drank 90ml of breastmilk and then an hour later another 50ml. He would never do this with formula and normally only drinks 60ml of formula every 2 hours
