Problem with Income Support

I thought when you have a baby, the amount of income support you get goes up?!

I went to the job centre last week and sorted it all out and they photocopied his birth certificate and sent it off but I had a letter today saying that my change in circumstances does not affect the amount of IS I get and that it's staying at £50.95 a week. This isn't right is it?

You should also get the Single parent Rate which is bout £17 and and £56 for dependant child.

But dont quote me on it.

HTH.

I'm sooo pissed off! They sent my birth certificate off for me at the job centre so that they could increase my money but they're saying that I won't get anything more!

I didnt go into job centre and i didnt have to send birth certifcate off either. I just rang Income support number and told them id had him and they took details and then i got a letter about 5 weeks later saying i was getting backpayment for the 5 weeks for the £14 extra i should have been getting and that also i would now get £64.30 a week. Does that make sense?

Mine stayed the same? because the IS is for you and you get child tax credit and child benefit when you have a baby so why would you need more IS?

Income support is supposed to be £64 odd for a single parent x

hi
income support is for YOU
child benefit and child tax credits is for the CHILD
why do you need more money for yourself when you have had a baby?

I was on IS whilst pregnant and was told to ring the helpline like Jemma when he was born so they could change it. I would ring them and see why they've not changed it?

You get child tax credit and child benefit. used to be u claimed income support for ur child, but thats not the case now. Have u applied for child tax credits? That will work out about £50 a week, and £12 i think or more child benefit

I think it might go up to £64.30. But you should get child tax credits of around £60 per week too and then £20 per week child benefit. So you need to call the tax credits people :) as others have said, the system has changed, you used to get the money for baby through your IS, whereas now you get it from tax credits instead xx

I was on IS before I had Kacie at £50 a week. Then rang the income support number to change my circumstances, and had a letter through in the post a couple weeks later saying that its going upto £64, and the backdated amount. Give them a ring hun x

Er, excuse me you snobby cow!

I am quite aware what the benefits are and who they are for thankyou very much.

I was TOLD by my midwife, the jobcentre, other people who are/were pregnant or have children that when you go from being a 22 year old to a 22 year old WITH A CHILD, the amount of income support you get GOES UP.

Which happens to be FACT and has now happened.

If you have an issue with single mothers on benefits, (which it seems apparent to me that you do), I suggest you get out of this forum.

And in answer to your question, "why do you need more money for yourself when you have had a baby?"....if there is money on offer that is going to make me and my son's life any easier (because right now it really couldn't get any harder)...then I will damn well accept it! Who the hell are you to judge me and decide where you think my money should go and how much you think I should get?

If you have a problem with single mothers, why not pick on the fathers that put them in this situation.

Bloody cheek! Snobby witch.

And to everyone else who replied, thankyou for the advice. It's all sorted now :)

It's funny how it's the single mothers who UNDERSTOOD, who gave me good advice and polite answers and the others who didn't have a clue because they're not in this situation who gave me the snobby remarks.

:hugs: Glad its all sorted now xx

Glad its sorted. JC can be a total pain in the ass :(

They can! You'll never guess what their latest move is?

I had a letter from income support last week saying they were deducting £15 a week for British Gas. First I'd heard of it?!?!!? I rang them up, turns out it was just some mental mistake they'd made. Takes the piss!!

Get used to it hun, income support are horrendous, take all letters with a pinch of salt until you've spoken to them on the phone. Glad you've got it sorted, it's bloody hard been a single mum on benefits, I have been there so completely understand every last penny counts. They can't deduct any money for bills (gas, electric, water) without your say so, they can if you have rent arrears or council tax however but you'd still get some notice.

And usually arrears would only be taken off at £3 per week too.... never that amount.

Glad u got it sorted....
