Questions about IVF procedure- Can you pay extra?

We were discussing the possibility of twins on clomid and IVF and after a long conv. came to the conclusion that this would be preferential to us rather than one.

Our FS has told us with our IVF we will have two eggs put back in at the most. I know chances are that generally one will be successful. We have been thinking about this since we first were notified that IVF will be next year.

So that brings me to my query, if possible can you pay extra or waive the regulations by signing an agreement?

Has anyone done this - i.e. had three or four eggs inserted rather than two?

(P.S. This did come up again in conversation after watching the mom of 8 documentary the other night) - so I thought I'd ask my lady friends

Are you nhs or private? I dont think the nhs will do (i think they used to do three embryos, but now 2) it but privately they might....

:wohoo: that's exciting!

We're talking about doing NHS first, but if it would more likely result in twins or triplets through private then we may rather pay private to save any heartache.

If that makes sense!

Am not sure whether the rules are the same in Scotland, but in England, you can only have two embryos transfered, and now fertility clinics are monitored for their twins levels and recommendations are that they in some cases only transfer one embryo. This applies to both nhs and private treatment.

My oh had twins by ivf and they implanted 3, but one didnt make it. That was 9 years ago.... I thought the new rules appplied only to nhs but I could have that wrong.

Subaru555 where are you thinking of going? I am in stirling and I am going to norway next spring if not pregnant before then. I am pretty sure they will implant 3 embryos and its half the price than here. Let me know if you want the clinic details

heya hun, i know the rules might be different in scotland than in england, but i'm doing IVF nhs but at a private clinic, and they will only transfer one embie - and we defo couldn't pay for extra - something to do with the costs to th nhs antenatal. not sure if this helps you though hun.

hope your journey is a successful one hun ! x x x

found this on the HFEA website

HFEA code of practice

G.8.5 Management of risks arising from multiple embryo
transfers
G.6.2.4 Consent:number of eggs or embryos to be transferred
Where a woman is to receive treatment using her own eggs, or
embryos created using her own eggs, whether fresh or previously
cryopreserved:
G.8.5.1 (a) where the woman is aged under 40 at the time of transfer the
centre should not transfer more than two eggs or two embryos
in any treatment cycle, regardless of the procedure used; S.7.6.10 Clinical
treatment
(b) where the woman is aged 40 or over at the time of transfer the
centre should not transfer more than three eggs or three
embryos in any treatment cycle, regardless of the procedure
used.

so you have to be over 40 to even have a chance of having 3 transfered in the uk

Abroad it is then!

I knew the HFEA had so many regs and as I thought it seems to only allow two. Bummer eh?

I understand it's costing the NHS more even if you do it privately but surely there should be an option (logically speaking) that there could be certain legislation along the lines of "3-4 implanted with 2 - 4 successful implantation and development = an extra fee payable for the ante-natal care".

I'm sure if there was at least an option to allow the 3 - 4 option, many people would pay extra for both the treatment, ante natal care, even an annual fee for the extra care till the children were 5, just to undergo treatment and bring healthy babies into the world!

It's not as if they won't pay nat insurance and tax when they're older!!!

My only other concern may be that the success rates are significantly lower for the more babies implanted.

I would love the Norway clinic details, this country is rubbish!

i can understand why they say only 2 due to the complications during pregnancy for twins and triplets for both the mother and the babies and there are no garantees that it will work first time anyway they say it takes on average 3 ivf cycle for a women to get pregnant

We were told that you don't significantly increase your chances of success by having multiple embies put back, something like only a 5% extra chance of a positive result if you have 2 rather than 1.

I don't think that unless you're over 40 you'll find a UK clinic (private or nhs) that'll do more than 2.

Good luck.

Depends on which country you are in. You have to weigh up the pros and the cons. Most places say it is entirely irresponsible to place back four and I would agree with that. They say they will occasionally place back 3 if a woman is over a certain age but they mostly limit it to two. There are valuable reasons for this, i.e. the health of the embryos and the babies and the health of the woman.

I had issues with single embryo transfer. Now, looking back, having gone through IVF, I would advise every woman to think long and hard about transferring multiple embryos. Often, it can be more harmful than good.

Thanks for all your input ladies! :)

My apologies obviously the number allowed has changed since oh had his twins.

If you want the norway details PM me. Good luck hun. XXX

I have an on going problem with fv and thats where I am going to ask to be referred!

Great idea! :) Good luck xx

She did say we'd be sent to Dundee. No idea why!

Dundee is way better than FV, plus you get three proper full attempts. FV is 2 but they count each stage as an attempt. Smoke and mirrors methinks!

Aye I know, well I can't really complain if I'm getting three instead of two I suppose! The only reason why we'd come to the twin conclusion was due to this taking over your life, and as we would actually like up to 5 children, it would be nice if we didn't have to go through it five times.

How soon do we need to wait before being put on the waiting list if we had a successful pregnancy through IVF. Is it one year after the birth if you have been trying during that time? As we're hoping to straight after the birth to increase of chances of natural conception.
