Hi girls,

I have a few questions I hope those seasoned travellers out there can answer for me. (Apologies in advance if some of the questions are a bit daft!)

Quick info - We live abroad & plan to take DS back to the UK on holiday at the start of Januray. He will be just over 7 months. (I like to be well prepared, specially where my boys concerned!)

1. How do you heat baby's milk/food on the plane?
2. Where do you change their nappy as the toilets as usually freezing on night flights!!!
3. Do you take your "decent" buggy with you? I'm concerned it will get wrecked in the hold & as you know they arent cheap!
4. As Jan will be freezing are pramsuits/snowsuits any good or are they too fiddly so I'm best sticking with a jacket?
5. How do you stick to baby's bed time routine with the time difference? - There is 3 hours difference between where I am & the UK.

Think thats enough to be getting on with for now! lol

Additionally if anyone has any travelling tips they can share I'd really appreciate it!

Thank youuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu!!

firstly the aircrew will help to heat milk for you
take a cheap knockabout buggy
don't bother with a pram suit just a good coat and footmuff etc
change nappy on your knee if it's too cold but i don't think it will be or will hurt for a couple of minutes
my advice is keep your watch at 'home' time and stick to your usual times, i did this recently on holiday. it might be a pain in the ass but better than starting all over again

sorry for short answers but am bfing

Hi :flow:

1. How do you heat baby's milk/food on the plane? I took a unopened can of formula and pouches of purees all ina cool bag in my carry on - they were all fine with that. I used the hot water form the planes galley
2. Where do you change their nappy as the toilets as usually freezing on night flights!!! I used the loo, or the in bassinet if it was just wee.
3. Do you take your "decent" buggy with you? I'm concerned it will get wrecked in the hold & as you know they arent cheap! No, most airport have buggies you can use (Dubai are particularly good!) I borrowed one in the UK - but would have just bought a cheapy at babies 'r' us or lined up a 2nd hand one if i'd been there for longer (I only stayed 10 days)
4. As Jan will be freezing are pramsuits/snowsuits any good or are they too fiddly so I'm best sticking with a jacket? I really rate a good snow suit, double zip up the front is best, and lots of different layers and a couple of blankets (on flight) as I found the temp fluctuated lots (it got very hot at one point too) a suit is also good as you can pop it on just before getting off and be sure bubba is lovely and warm
5. How do you stick to baby's bed time routine with the time difference? - There is 3 hours difference between where I am & the UK. I'm no idea I'm afraid, my time dif was 13h!!! I just kept to LO's bed cues and rode it out

I am watching this too as will soon be travelling with a 7 month old.

Can i hijack a tiny bit and add a question???! how do you get baby to sleep on a plane with no bassinets and just your lap?

i wore my lo out in the airport then popped her on the boob

Best thing is to ask for a bassinet/bulk head seat, most airlines will set these aside if you ask
Other wise I used a cross body carry (head by one elbow crook, bum under the other arm) and rocked her side to side, it wasn't easy as she very long, but it worked okish!

I also really rate using a moby/meitai/ergo or similar to transport bubba while in transit - so much easier (and then you can use the handcart/buggy for luggage

We've just been on holiday came back last Sunday. I found that Oliver coped alot better with all the changes than I thought he would, I just relaxed and tried to keep to his routine for feeding and meal times and he slept when he was tired.
1. How do you heat baby's milk/food on the plane?
I breastfeed but the flight attendants have access to boiling water so they will be able to help you warm up the food/milk you need
2. Where do you change their nappy as the toilets as usually freezing on night flights!!!
We changed ny don across mine and my husbands knee but was only a wet nappy if it was a dirty one I would have taken him to the toilet
3. Do you take your "decent" buggy with you? I'm concerned it will get wrecked in the hold & as you know they arent cheap!
We bought a cheaper pushchair/buggy but it didn't get ruined and I actually use it now were home as it's so much easier

4. As Jan will be freezing are pramsuits/snowsuits any good or are they too fiddly so I'm best sticking with a jacket?
I'm not sure on this as we only used a snowsuit when he was tiny might be more difficult at 7 months

We just followed his cues, if we were out when ge was tired he just slept in his pushchair, he was absolutely fine and didn't seem to bother him having a slightly different routine.

He just fell asleep feeding and then led in my arms or on my chest it was more of a nap than a sleep but he seemed comfy.

Hope this helps x

We moved from UK to NZ when LO was 6 months with a week in LA on the way, and these were our experiences:

1. I breastfed, so don't know about bottles, but we were given a weaning meal for the LO, which we had reserved when booking the flight, although she didn't really eat any of it as had only just started on solids.

2. We changed her in the toilets just fine and didn't find them cold.

3. We took our travel buggy (Baby Jogger) as didn't want to risk damaging the proper one on the plane, though didn't end up having any problems.

4. I think a snowsuit would be good for January in UK.

5. Our LO adjusted to the time difference (12h!) pretty quickly and we just tried to get her to the new time as soon as possible, though obviously let her nap if she was tired. Because your time difference is only three hours and it's only for a holiday, it might be easiest just to change LO's times partially by 1-2h.

Quick background, LO was just over 7 months when we flew... We live in the us so the flight was about 7 hours, night flight way there and day flight the way back

1. How do you heat baby's milk/food on the plane?
I breastfeed so don't know about bottles, and we just gave LO the fruit pouches on the plane because hey taste ok cold (although I'm sure they'd be able to warm them - in fact I think some airlines have baby food on board)
2. Where do you change their nappy as the toilets as usually freezing on night flights!!!
We changed LO just before going on the plane and put her in a nighttime nappy and only changed her if she pooed - I found the toilets were fine, just be quick, the changing table folds down over the loo so is actually quite large! My tip would be to only take what you need to the loo, don't take your entire bag, there just isn't the space!
3. Do you take your "decent" buggy with you? I'm concerned it will get wrecked in the hold & as you know they arent cheap!
We were going to take our proper buggy with us but then realized that it plus our luggage stood no chance of fitting in our hire car unless we got a HUGE one so bought an umbrella style one to take with us
4. As Jan will be freezing are pramsuits/snowsuits any good or are they too fiddly so I'm best sticking with a jacket?
We only had LO in a pram suit when she was tiny so don't know about trying to get an older LO in one
5. How do you stick to baby's bed time routine with the time difference? - There is 3 hours difference between where I am & the UK.
We had a 5 hour difference but travelled from west to east so it was easier to shift lo's bedtime slightly (instead of bed bath at 6.30 we went for around 8.30 ish meaning we could go out with LO in an evening) but on the way back we just stuck with normal times and put up with 2 days of unsettled nights then we were fine

Also our ergo was a lifesaver, especially in the airport and boarding etc. LO was really grumpy when we got off the first flight and so refused to go in the buggy, which we collected at the gate and so it was a real struggle to get everything through to baggage claim where we could get a trolley... So much so that on our return flight we hold checked our buggy and just stuck with the ergo, much better, especially considering we ended up having to get a bus from the plane to the terminal!

i wore my lo out in the airport then popped her on the boob
^this, then held her asleep in the cradle type hold with my coat jammed under my arm for support so I didn't get a dead arm!
