Reflux Help & Support Thread

helloo ladies..can i share my experience

alfie was diagnosed with reflux last month..silent relfux.
feeding time was a constant battle i dreaded it. alfie's also a hungry baby so wanted feeding every 2 hours and with the constant crying, fussing, spitting up, taking bottle out of mouth, refusing to drink it was really getting me down. we had numerous trips to the doctors none of which were any use they just thought it was colic eventually we took him to AnE we were so fed up he was in pain and there was nothing we could do to help him. we were helpless we waited 6 hours at AnE with alfie screaming like he did after every feed only to be told why dont you try soy formula =o well we waited 6 hours for that we bought some soy formula sma wysoya its awful stuff :sick: i made him a bottle he took one sip and refused to drink anymore he wouldnt take anything for 4 hours i gave up and reverted back to aptamil 1 we then took him back to the doctors and demanded they do something i actually got a bottle out and started feeding him (typically he took the bottle no fussing spitting he took it perfectly lol) the doctor said hes not got reflux hes fine its just colic...anyways we got out into the waiting room and the screaming commenced it was horrendous the worst id every heard him..everyone was looking and asking what was wrong we told them we thought it was reflux and a couple of ladies with children who had reflux recognised the symptoms and agreed it most deffinately was reflux. the receptionist told the dr to come out as something wasnt right we went back in and he did confirm it did sound more than colic and must be silent reflux (we were so relieved we finally knew what it was) he prescribed infant gaviscon and said if it didnt help come back..we got the gaviscon and for the first couple of days nothing changed but then after those couple of days WOW!! it was like wheres my baby gone?!?! its changed our lives really =)...he still has the odd day out of a month but its so much better hes like a different baby.
My point in sharing this experience is not that gaviscon works for every baby because it doesnt we were one of the lucky ones to be honest..but keep pushing for doctors to help because if it were left to half of them theyd let the poor babies carry on in pain ..to quoate one doctor "well if it is reflux hell get used to the pain in time" i couldve lamped him one.
also it does get better, i found it so hard to have that strong bond with alfie dont get me wrong i love him to the stars and back but its so hard when you dont know why there crying having a babies hard anyway but when theyve got reflux deary me =(...but now i just love being with him i actually look forward to feeding times hes so happy and happy baby = a happy mum =)

i hope all the mums who have babies with reflux get the help and support they need from this thread. i dont know what i wouldve done without BnB a month ago

:hugs:

Can i just say, please dont take this the wrong way but, he may not be a hungry baby, it may be that he drinks to get rid of the burning in his throat. Im not trying to sound like i know it all but quite a few babys want to keep being fed because it cools their throat x

I am sure Evan does. He roots for boob whilst uncontrollably crying will have a bit stop crying and then puke it up :(

This morning he had his feed as normal and was totally fine, I gave him a bath and got him dressed byt the time that was done it was a good 45 mins after his feed, maybe more. I sat him on his swing (not even swinging just the music) so I could get ready as we were going to me work. I come into the lounge and find him covered in sick :dohh:

When will it end!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Oh and 2 doses of lactulose one last night and one this morning and still no poo :(

Just wanted to say thank you to everyone who posts in this thread. Sometimes I feel very alone when Katie is at her worst, and horrible that I can't do anything to comfort her. This thread keeps me going!

We don't know if she does have silent reflux or lactose intolerance (or I guess, either!!), I'm waiting for the LI results...I'm doubtful it's that because she's never ever screamed (touchwood) during her middle of the night bottle - but I do wonder if that's because she's on comfort milk which containts 50% less lactose. Maybe because she's gone 6-8hrs from her last bottle she doesn't scream because she hasn't got as much 'build up' in her system...wheres in the day she goes 3-4hrs? It's probably not that at all but I find it so strange she's never screamed in the night when the rest of the time it can be all day!

She also has red spots which were on her cheeks, neck, and are now spreading to her chest. I've read a sign of LI could be a rash so wondering if it is this. I just don't know :( She has a constant cold/sniffles too.

I hope you do find out what's wrong. I think we've found our miracle milk with the Neocate, I was convinced Macy didn't have a milk allergy but today is day 3 and she is a million times better, no screaming at/after feeds and her scaly, spotty and rashy skin has gone, she doesn't scream when her wind comes out now either. She's now projectile vomiting several times a day though as the milk is so watery (didn't do this before as the reflux was silent) so I'm wondering if I should thicken it with Carobel or Gaviscon, just don't want constipation again. The vomiting isn't bothering her at all but I'm just worried about keeping some milk down her! x

Stardust - I meant to say, how do you stop Macy chucking up after her dream feed? I was thinking of trying Nim's 10pm feed as a dream feed but can't see how it will work cos of her spitting? Do you just hold her upright but asleep for 30 mins afterwards?

Macy was on SMA Staydown which completely stopped the vomiting although the reflux was still silent. Now that she is on Neocate it's so watery she's spitting up and projectile vomiting all the time lol but at least it's not bothering her in the slightest. I noticed she had been a little sick in her carrycot earlier. Don't know what I'll do tonight, I'll still do the dreamfeed as it's so good for her but I think I'll hold her upright for 10mins afterwards and then put her down but stay awake for another 20mins to check on her. She is so sleepy and relaxed at the feed and takes it so slowly I don't think it'll be a problem anyway.

Her bed is propped up quite far and she also sleeps on her side as she quite often chokes on her own saliva xx

can i ask if the ranitatine dose lo is on seems low? will share my story later...only have one hand free :) she's on .5 ml twice a day... doesn't seem to be doing much. she's 11 weeks old and 14 pounds. thanks!

oh and how long did it take to work?

Sorry not sure hun but didnt want to read and run, also one handed as feeding lol

It is fairly low harrison (weighing 12lb 12oz at 4months) was on 0.4ml twice a day until last month when it got upped to 1ml, he weighed 15lb 4oz then. X

Babyjiva - it does seem low, Nim had 1ml 3x day (it didn't do much for her, but I've heard it's worked well for other people) she's just over 9lb 6
It should have effect within 72h

We are now on Losec, 1x capsule daily It seems to be helping, we stopped the Gaviscon cos she was getting upset about pooping, do we have more upchuck but she mostly smiles through it, much less screamy, although we still get the odd attack.

I think she's having a growth spurt, she ate a lot yesterday afternoon but was ok last night and early this morning but drank more (both boobs rather than her usual one) but this afternoon she's just fed and fed and fed hardly slept and been SO unsettled. She's now sleeping on me and I'm praying my boobs fill back up!! Not helped by get spilling a couple of oz per feed .... I keep telling her not to waste it!

Hi again girls!
So how do i make this thread sticky?
~~~
Had Drs yesterday for his 8 week+ check and 1st set of jabs!
The Dr mentioned the reflux, he said, "he's gaining good weight, just finish the course of Ranitidine and by then he may have grown out of it" i have about 4 weeks supply left. He told me if he hasn't improved then to come back. I am using 0.5ml 3x a day. It does seem to help but its stopping his wind coming up.
you have to speak to admin about making it a sticky i think. EVERYONE told me that Harrison would grow out of his reflux by 6months or on solids. So when i said to the doctor and hv they both said 'ohhh... Hes one of those..' :dohh: meaning it could go on till hes a year if not longer. I put 5ml of gripe water into harrisons bottles to help him bring his wind up x
I give Nim gripe water if she's windy too, just use a syringe straight into her mouth. She loves it!
Another BAD day on the sick front and it is only 3pm nearly :haha: His sick has never been this bad. He is just going along his normal business and keeps happily chucking up thick sick. It isn't even the cottage cheesy sick. I think it is the thickened gaviscon, I have no idea, but it is all the time. He has been up right all afternoon either on me, in his swing or his nap was propped up on the sofa next to me.
I am getting right pissed off :cry:
Can I join you girls. My twin girl, Hannah, has reflux - she's currently on domperidone and ranitidine, plus something called Thick and Easy that we put in expressed breast milk to make it harder to make a reappearance! The meds seem to be controlling the vomiting pretty well (she's prob sick once a day) but she's still in a lot of pain during and after feeding and cries for a good few hours (usually between 11pm and 3am - joy!).
We don't have the problems with weight gain as Hannah is tube fed for the majority of her feeds (she has a cleft palate).
Reflux is just awful.
That's interesting, I didn't realise Ranitidene did this, is it one of the known side effects or just something you've noticed?? Could explain some of the pain that Hannah seems to have been in....
My LO is on 0.3ml 3 times a day, she's 11 weeks too but only weighs 7lb7 as she was early. Can't help on how long it takes to work I'm afraid as my LO was put on it when she was still in the NICU so came home on it.
