amanda - docs may jst keep increasing the ranit until they reach the max dosage for his weight and will probably tell you to give it 2wks to work, but it should work within a few days!! If it does start helpin, be aware that it is really weight sensitive and the dosage will need increased every 2-3wks cos ur LO gains weight so fast. Also, some babies build up a tolerance to this med very quickly, so it may stop workin after a short spell.
Nxt step will be to change over to omeprazole ( much better at reducing the acid), but be aware again that they will start on a really low dose and keep increasing until it works. However, the good news is that it almost ALWAYS helps massively. Should start workin within a few days, but may take longer if his oesophagus and stomach lining have been badly damaged by the acid (tummy will still hurt until its had time to heal - can take a few weeks). You may also need to change ff if LO cant tolerate cows milk protien, which is a BIG possibility - you need a prescription for special ff.
Thanks Stephy, they didnt even increase his meds, just told me to see a pediatrician. I did laugh when she said "gee his nose is a bit blocked" no shit its only been like that since he was born!
I have an appointment in 2 weeks, but because the chocking episodes have been so bad I might just take him to emergency in the mean time. Will see how I go over the weekend.
Good for you!!! You cant risk him gettin complications from breathin in the refluxed acid. I'm often tellin people to take they're baby to a&e, but for some reason we seem to avoid it even when we should go! Sophie only got help after we took her to a&e at the childrens hospital (no help at general a&e), and I still feel really guilty that we didn't take her sooner. If he's bad at all I would defo go straight to a childrens hospital if its within travellin distance, if not at least head for a hospital with a paediatric unit - I said we were visiting friends nearby cos felt i kinda needed an excuse (??!). I had to take her back time and again, and they also doubled her omeprazole dose over the telephone on one occassion. but other times I had to firmly insist that they had to help her. Stay strong for ur LO's sake xxx
lilbumpblue - there is light at the end of the reflux tunnell, fingers and toes crossed all stays good x
miss bump - defo sounds like the reflux comin back: the excess acid causes increased mucous (maybe she's soundin a bit 'hoarse'too?) & hiccups. Night is always the 1st to start goin downhill because lyin down makes it easier for the acid to flow back up, and also the stomach acid is stronger cos isn't being neutralised by food. She may well start lookin 4 feeds closer together again too b4 the pulling off and stuff starts again. I went through the same thing every time sophie gained weight and needed more meds, but still used to doubt myself (maybe she's teething, got a cold etc). I think ur instincts are defo right - maybe you could phone the consultant to explain and he might put her back on the meds??
