Reflux Help & Support Thread

Oh Gilz you can't feel guilty!! Its not your fault!!! I was on stand by to deliver Katerina any minute after 7 months as the placenta wasn't working well. In the end I was told I can go to 38 weeks no problem but my waters broke at 35+6!! :dohh:

I've done some research thought since I wrote my other post and apparently there is absolutely no connection between prematurity and allergies! I guess its just luck!

Gilz - I really feel for you, I am sorry you are both going through this. It is so so hard I know, I had 2 of them on the go at once :O)

Let us know how the endoscopy goes xxx

Big hugs xxx

Thanks girls. I spoke to Noahs gastro consultants secretary and she said that Noah is scheduled for an endoscopy and sigmoidoscopy so I think that means all the areas that need to be looked at will be looked at.

Now just need to get to next Friday.

we have had James' barium meal appointment through today for 21st September...his bloody birthday  i just knew that would happen! X x x

Just PM'd you - we have the same consultant at yorkhill and just had the scopes done too!!

Gilz I hope they get your little man sorted out soon!

Its horrible that there seems to be so many suffering babies.

Happyface, there was only one formula that he was on just under 2 weeks and the one he is on now has not quite been 2 weeks yet but the others were 2 weeks or longer.
I did consider allergy's but since changing bottles the wind is a lot better. I notice that when i use an avent bottle again he fusses and pops like crazy, so sticking to mam is definitely helping.

We had 3 chocking episodes last night and he seems really stuffy again. saline spray doesn't help either. hes really raspy and mucosy too but it must be in his nose and throat because every time i take him to the doctors his chest is clear.

I am wondering whether a thickener might be usefull for some of his feeds? We had good results with gaviscon, i just dont want to make the chocking worse, its really frightening!

Amanda - classic signs of severe reflux here (especially the congestion and choking which is caused by excess acid!) - have a look here: www.infantrefluxdisease.com, and start pushing for meds right away to keep ur LO comfy: www.littlerefluxers.com

Kelly - keep growin that squidge mama!

oops, wee one jst wakened - gotta go x

Thanks Stephy, he was put on Zantac nearly 2 weeks ago and it has done nothing. The past 2 days he had been worse and during the day will only sleep for an hr at a time and then scream the rest of the time. Back to the doctors tomorrow, hopefully to try something else!

amanda - docs may jst keep increasing the ranit until they reach the max dosage for his weight and will probably tell you to give it 2wks to work, but it should work within a few days!! If it does start helpin, be aware that it is really weight sensitive and the dosage will need increased every 2-3wks cos ur LO gains weight so fast. Also, some babies build up a tolerance to this med very quickly, so it may stop workin after a short spell.
Nxt step will be to change over to omeprazole ( much better at reducing the acid), but be aware again that they will start on a really low dose and keep increasing until it works. However, the good news is that it almost ALWAYS helps massively. Should start workin within a few days, but may take longer if his oesophagus and stomach lining have been badly damaged by the acid (tummy will still hurt until its had time to heal - can take a few weeks). You may also need to change ff if LO cant tolerate cows milk protien, which is a BIG possibility - you need a prescription for special ff.

Hope this helps and not too much info - most of all trust ur gut instinct & insist calmly but firmly that they need to move his treatment forward if he's not getting better x

Thanks Stephy, they didnt even increase his meds, just told me to see a pediatrician. I did laugh when she said "gee his nose is a bit blocked" no shit its only been like that since he was born!
I have an appointment in 2 weeks, but because the chocking episodes have been so bad I might just take him to emergency in the mean time. Will see how I go over the weekend.

James was always very rubbishy its also a sign of a milk allergy. At least lo will get sorted quicker X

Luca always had a stuffed nose and sounded very wheezy and bunged up - until he was put on a special formula (neocate) and it went within a couple of weeks!!

Hi ladies I've posted this is the toddler section but wanted to get your opinions here too...

Evie had her consultant appointment on monday and we've been told to stop all meds for 2 weeks and have a follow up appointment.

Since stopping Ranitidene and Domperidone Evie has been very clingy with me all week and very very unsettled at night. She will sleep 7pm - 9pm and then wont settle properly until about 1am. She will sleep but will fidget, kick her feet and legs and generally wiggle and toss and turn while still having a quick breastfeed in-between and she has never been this unsettled at night for this long. We've both been very tired

However all the 'usual' reflux signs have gone.

She hasn't been sick, not straining or back arching (especially when nursing) so I'm wondering if this is still intact reflux of just a blip?

She has been having more hiccups and I know that's a reflux sign

Do you think it's still reflux or just a coincidence??

Good for you!!! You cant risk him gettin complications from breathin in the refluxed acid. I'm often tellin people to take they're baby to a&e, but for some reason we seem to avoid it even when we should go! Sophie only got help after we took her to a&e at the childrens hospital (no help at general a&e), and I still feel really guilty that we didn't take her sooner. If he's bad at all I would defo go straight to a childrens hospital if its within travellin distance, if not at least head for a hospital with a paediatric unit - I said we were visiting friends nearby cos felt i kinda needed an excuse (??!). I had to take her back time and again, and they also doubled her omeprazole dose over the telephone on one occassion. but other times I had to firmly insist that they had to help her. Stay strong for ur LO's sake xxx

lilbumpblue - there is light at the end of the reflux tunnell, fingers and toes crossed all stays good x

miss bump - defo sounds like the reflux comin back: the excess acid causes increased mucous (maybe she's soundin a bit 'hoarse'too?) & hiccups. Night is always the 1st to start goin downhill because lyin down makes it easier for the acid to flow back up, and also the stomach acid is stronger cos isn't being neutralised by food. She may well start lookin 4 feeds closer together again too b4 the pulling off and stuff starts again. I went through the same thing every time sophie gained weight and needed more meds, but still used to doubt myself (maybe she's teething, got a cold etc). I think ur instincts are defo right - maybe you could phone the consultant to explain and he might put her back on the meds??
