Hello ladies,

I wanted to let you know about a trial I have joined. It is for women who have had 3 or more miscarriages. It is trying to find out if giving prendnisolone (a steroid drug) can help women with high natural killer cells prevent miscarriages.

The link between high NKcells and increased risk of miscarriage has already been proven. I've already been in for my screening, and I was found to have borderline high numbers of the cells. In order to do the test, they need to take a biopsy of your womb. This feels like having an IUD/coil inserted - and some women find it quite painful, while others don't mind. I did think it hurt - but it was worth it.

The next step is waiting for your results, takes about 3-4 weeks. If your levels are high they will ask you to let them know when you get a :bfp:. You then go in to the hospital, and get 'randomised' to receive either the drug or the placebo. The drug is the steroid, and the placebo is just a fake pill.

SO - that is the thing. Dr. Quenby is not 100% sure that the drug will work, although she has had some promising results in an earlier study, where the drug reduced miscarriages by about a 1/3rd. But because the drug is not yet proven, this trial is to prove it works. That is why you have a 50/50 chance of getting the drug or the fake pill to take. She needs to compare women with high NK cells who took the drug to those who did not. See this link: https://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/health/4103884.stm

I know it might not seem fair that you can't be guaranteed the drugs - but if you do miscarry - you are welcome to come back to the clinic with your next :bfp: and then you will be given the drugs - 100% for sure.

I guess for me I thought it was worth a try - worth getting tested even if it means that it is one more potential cause I could rule out. And worth trying with the pills - in case it works.

Wanted to let you know. If you wanted to make an appointment to get screened you can call Dr. Quenby's secretary Diane on: 0151 702 4271

Oh - and you also get good care and frequent scans on the trial - that is a real bonus I thought.... and Dr. Quenby is nice and friendly. She will take you seriously - which is good. I'm tired of drs treating me like this is nothing.
