Hi ladies,

My LO is 2.5 at Christmas and I'm still not sure whether to get her a scuttlebug or similar or try her on a balance bike this early.

Does anyone have any recommendations about either for this age? She has a ride on toy as an 18 month old, which has now turned into a scooter type thing, so I also didn't want to duplicate on that.

I just don't want to get her a scuttlebug and wish we'd gone for the balance bike instead!

Thanks for your help!

Is she big or small for her age? The scuttlebug looks great but ive read reviews that kids outgrow them about 3 years old.x

^^ this..if she is a tiny 2.5 year old the scuttle bug would be fine. But in our situation my LO is only 18 months (a very big 18 months mind) and I think he will have out grown his scuttle by 2.5 and we will be looking to get a balance bike when he is 2-2.5.

My twins are 2 and a half and nearly too big for the scuttlebug but too small for their balance bikes x

We have a Scramble Bug but I think they're about the same height as the Scuttle Bugs and ours has been too small for my now-26 month old for quite a long time. I think we put it away about 8 months ago. She's not huge, about average I think.

I'd go for a Balance Bike for a 2.5 year old. My 2 year old could probably use her sister's if we ever got it out!

I would go balance bike, she might be a tiny bit small for it but should be able to use it come Springtime were the scuttlebug she'd be growing out of.
Alternatively wait until her birthday and get a balance bike.

We are going to get DS a balance bike for Christmas. He is small for his age so we took him to try some in halfords and toys r us and he could go the 10" ones no problem. He could sit on the 12" but was really wobbly and kept dropping it so I think it was just to big for him. We are not going to go for a crazyily expensive one as I hope maybe next year we can get him one with pedals.

I have also read/been told metal ones are best as they are more rebust and lighterweight.

Just found this on hot deals 10" metal girls https://www.toysrus.co.uk/Toys-R-Us...iate_CJ-_-1546795-_-11421823-_-Toys_Toys+R+Us

Not read any of the reviews but it has good stars.

Or a 12" wooden one https://www.groupon.co.uk/deals/nat...f_10&utm_campaign=aff_1&utm_content=aff_1&nlp

Vincent will be 2.5 at Christmas and we have got him a balance bike. Judging by the other kids at his nursery, he is average height but his big brother is getting a bike for Christmas and Vincent loves being like Harvey so we thought he'd like one that looks similar.

Also, I reckon he will get limited use out of it during the winter weather so by the time spring comes in it'll be perfect.

We have a balance bike and my LO is nearly 4 and only just fits it now. His is a 12" so I'd say go for a 10" balance bike. He got it last year for his 3rd birthday (dec) and only fitted it at the end of summer this year. lol

We have had both a scuttlebug and balance bike. The scuttlebug was outgrown before my LO hit 2yrs. The balance bike however is still going strong today. We did have to buy the extender seat for the bike to accommodate a taller child. The Strider bike we have I highly recommend.

Thanks for all the replies. LO is not small for her age, a little above average I'd say.

Sounds like I should go for the Balance Bike! Eeeek Seems so grown up!

And thanks for the bargain links, will definitely check those out.

Also thanks for the suggestion to go and try out the bike. I'm so intent on surprises that I'd forgotten it might be nice to get her to try a couple out to see what sizes etc! :dohh:

We've got both...he got the scuttlebug for his birthday and then we got a balance bike in March so he was nearly 2.5.

Joe is tiny though (he is 3 in November and only just wearing 2-3 clothes) but mastered the balance bike really quickly.

He still rides the scuttlebug indoors and still fits on it fine but there is no way he could ride it very far outdoors whereas he can ride his balance bike all the way to school/round our estate and in the park etc.

You will definitely get more use out of the balance bike than the scuttlebug.

He is a very active little boy and we've now got him a Mini Micro Scooter for his birthday which I think will be his favourite present ever!

My little girl is 2.5 and she has out grown her scuttle bug already and she's a petite 2.5yr old too. :(
