Seatbelts vs isofix bases

The UK guidelines are that a baby is not in a carseat for longer than 2 hours without a break, I rarely go in my car for that long although the drive from mine to my mums can be up to 90 minutes.

As far as I know all new cars in the UK have had Isofix installed for the last 3 years. I believe it is safer too as the the base is securely fixed to the car and there is less room for human error, even just that one time.

Some companys have, others offer it as a optional extra, but from 2012 ALL new cars will legally have to have it :flower:

Hey Hun, the car seat is safe with out isofix base otherwise it would not be sold! we got the isofix base free with our pram (it was included in the offer) so will be using it but only cus its there and is gunna be easier but if you have seen a pram that you like just remember that if it was not safe they would have had to make a base for it.

Your friends prob swear buy isofix due to how easy it is to use!!

xx

We have isofix because we feel it is safest, there is no room for error when fitting the base & seat (unlike with seatbelt) and it means the seat is directly connected to the framework of the car which again is about safety

If it was just a money making spin then why are they making it law that from 2012 ALL new cars have to have isofix fitted

yeah all new cars have to have them fitted - but has the law changed to say all babies/children must be seated with Isofix? or is it still most appropriate restraint for their size?

Personally I dont think there is a need to use IsoFix over the seatbelt. I see it as a marketing thing to play on the fears and guilt of parents. As long as the seatbelt and baby seat is fitted safely and correctly every time then I feel this is good enough.

think you hit the nail on the head there:thumbup:

Thank you. A lot of stuff is marekting drivel |I believe - hell, I work in sales/marketing, I know how it works lolol

I think these days parents are guilt tripped an awful lot over saftey, and there fewar being if they don't subscribed to it all then they will be branded as neglectful bad parents by the media and social groups etc and the fear is then built up over 'what if's' what if I hurt my baby etc.

If Isofix is so superior over seatbelts then why are adults and older children using them?? Am I putting myself and my bump and my older son in danger becuase I wear a seatbelt when I drive? Am I chuff.

yup, totally cashing in on paranoia. its AMAZING the amount of STUFF 'they' try to convince you that you NEED when you have a baby, i think that the isofix base falls into this list of STUFF....like new born baby sleep position devices wtfs that about?!:dohh:

haha yeah and not forgetting the divider thing so that you can put babys= the top of the cot and he cant wriggle down. fuck off, just move him to the bottom of the cot so his feet are near the bottom. honest to god!!

lol! you have to remember common sense isnt very common ;-)

not as of yet .....

however when they first made it law to have seat belts in a car they didn't make it law to wear them right away

Don't understand why you wouldn't want to use something that was already there that can make your child safer

but guess thats just my opinion :)

The Which? tests (which are very intensive) showed that the isofix bases makes car seats much more safe in a side impact collition, which I believe is due to the base being attached directly to the chasis rather than just relying upon the seat belt.
All car seats are safe in a car, hence why they're sold. They are safer with an isofix base, that's not to say that they are not safe without, they are just another level of protection.
Personally, I can't use isofix as my car doesn't have it, but I am getting an easyfix base. I have a three door car and a bad back and for me, I will find it easier to put the car into a base than strap it up each time I get the car seat out. That's a personal choice for me, it's convenient, plus I like the idea of it telling me simply if the seat is in correctly each time it's fitted.

I wont be using isofix as my car isnt compatable and from what ive read and like has been said before they seem to be a marketing thing, the only time that they are safer than a car seat is if the car seat is not belted in properly which is unlikely if you are putting it in yourself and you are confident with the instructions! I do like the ease of removing the car seat with an isofix base though but not enough so that I will be replacing my car!

I agree that the isofix base is more for convenience rather than safety. A car seat is still safe using the seatbelt attachment method alone (aslong as you do it correctly, obviously). However, some seatbelts aren't long enough to fit the car seat, like my OHs civic, so we have no choice but to get an isofix base x

i dont have and isofix base, but do however have the easyfix base - purely because it will be easier than having to climb in the back of the car to fit the seatbelt around the car seat whenever we are going out. but if OH is at work and im going somewhere in someone else car then the car seat will be strapped in using the seatbelt. x

We have an isofix base as we feel it adds a better level of protection in a crash. Also one of the other reasons is because it is so easy just to click the car seat in and out of the car, i have a 3 door so popping to the shops will be sooo much easier. I have no issues with just strapping the carseat in with a seatbelt if im going out in a friends car, but i would probably feel better if the car seat was on its base.
Looking at ours, when we click it in to the anchor points the base is fixed, it doesnt move or wobble about, its also super heavy so gravity will hold the car seat down better.

i dont understand why everyone makes fitting a carseat sound so much work. it is so easy that a child could probably do it though i def wouldnt recommend it. as for sayin the car seat could be put in wrong position most of them (infact most that i have seen) have a thing on the side that tells you when the seat is in the right position. i can understand if you have a 3 door car it would be alot easier to have a isofix cuz of all climbing around but other than that i think it is a waste of money
