The UK guidelines are that a baby is not in a carseat for longer than 2 hours without a break, I rarely go in my car for that long although the drive from mine to my mums can be up to 90 minutes.
As far as I know all new cars in the UK have had Isofix installed for the last 3 years. I believe it is safer too as the the base is securely fixed to the car and there is less room for human error, even just that one time.
Some companys have, others offer it as a optional extra, but from 2012 ALL new cars will legally have to have it
