hi ladies.

i was wondering if anyone has, or are intending to practice mattress wrapping for the prevention of SIDS?

Success of Mattress-Wrapping for Crib Death (SIDS) Prevention

Mattress-wrapping for crib death prevention, which has been publicized in New Zealand since 1995, has had a 100% success rate. About 800 crib deaths occurred in New Zealand during the years 1995 to 2005 inclusive, but there has been no reported crib death among the very large number of babies who have slept on mattresses wrapped in accordance with the BabeSafe mattress-wrapping protocol.

not sure whether this is common practice in other countries, but hadn't heard of this until i found it online a few months ago. any advice would be great. :flower:

ETA: information on the toxic gas theory here:
https://www.childalert.co.uk/absolutenm/templates/newstemplate.asp?articleid=164&zoneid=3

Dr Sprott states with certainty that the cause of cot death has been discovered: it is caused by very toxic nerve gases which can be generated from mattresses and certain other bedding used in
babies' cots.

The solution is to prevent exposure of babies to the gases, by wrapping mattresses in accordance with a specified protocol and ensuring that bedding used on top of a wrapped mattresses does not contain any phosphorus, arsenic or antimony (the chemicals which - when combined with fungal growth - can result in the gas generation concerned).

i've never heard of this? what on earth is mattress wrapping? gonna have to google it! x

sounds good to me.. just unsure as to why it isn't more popular in the UK if it's 100% successful? xx

I've heard about this, mostly because my DH is from NZ.. i am going to do it and also going to use one of these wraps, which help to prevent the baby rolling onto tummy and getting caught under covers etc.

thanks for this info. i'm going to look at it closer to the time when i have our baby.

Surely gases that contribute towards SIDS would be banned from usage in baby mattresses?!

Im in the UK and would like to know what sort of sheets would stop the gasses etc. and where I could get them?

it's the chemicals used in the mattresses that combine with the baby's sweat creating a fungus, which in turn creates the gas apparently. xx

I dont get it. Why not just buy a mattress cover so no liquids/sweat gets to the mattress. Also Im sure most will be airing out theirs before baby is here.
I was watching the demo and i would be worried that the baby would ride down and have the attachment near his or her face.

I thought SIDS had been around since forever, surely if the cause was chemicals in mattresses it wouldn't have been a problem like 100 years ago...

I'm just really confused about everything that we're supposed to do or not supposed to do to prevent SIDS.

I've heard of it and am definitely going to do it. It's like $40, but it's a small price to pay if it will save Dylan!

Scientifically it is impossible to "create a fungus" with chemicals and sweat. Fungal spores are always in the air and they will begin growing wherever there is a suitable environment.

Can't see a correctly wrapped mattress doing any harm but I'm not convinced by the childalert link - it states that smoking, bedsharing with smokers, back sleeping, feet to foot of cot sleeping does NOT make a difference to cot death when in fact it has been proven that these do make a difference!!

I think as long as you use safe bedding for babies - cotton sheets etc. and a safe sleeping area I wouldn't worry too much. Keeping the sleeping area aired daily and washing the bedding regularly on a hot wash would contribute too I think.

More research needs to be done! xx

What about the babies who die from SIDS in their moses baskets, car seats, prams?

Thats funny because most newborn babys cannot sweat.

then maybe it creates a suitable environment in which the fungus can grow. i am not a scientist, nor do i claim to be!
