Hi all, I'm a first timer and all my friends claim they have never had an issue with this so I'm here for advice. I have 2 0-6 sleeping bags for Evie, one of them is from Asda and came with a notice saying not to use if baby can fit head through neckhole, i.e. so it covers her mouth. She can do this in the Asda one as the neckhole is quite wide however in the Lollipop lane one I have she is fine. We're now though at the point where she is outgrowing the LL one and we have been looking at our ones in 6-18 month, one from Next, one from Mothercare and on both of them the neckhole is massive and she could easily drop her head back into it. Has anyone else ever found this an issue? Or does she have a really small head and neck? Is there a way around it, maybe putting some extra stitches in somewhere?

I would look at the weight, rather than age -- e.g. the ones we bought at tesco and mothercare are for babies over 4kgs, and my LO was about 3.06kg when born, so even when it says 0-6, it's not for smaller babies. The same would be true for 6-12 months, check the minimum weight suggested -- it might just be too big at the moment.

Another idea would be to open the bottom of your existing sleeping bags and add fabric (maybe in terrycloth?) to the bottom and stitch back up, therefore you are using the ones you have for a little longer?

best wishes

We couldn't use a sleeping bag with Eleanor until she was about three months old as the bags said that she needed to weigh at least ten pounds (took us a while to get her there!). We just used a sheet (and a blanket when necessary) until then. It was the middle of summer then, of course. It might be that another bag type might fit her better - do you have any other mummy friends who have e.g. grobags or similar? Maybe they'd let you try her in one they have for their child so you can see if it would fit your daughter?

I put stitches under the arms, she can't wiggle down if she can't move her arms out

We had a problem with the mothercare ones DS outgrew his at 3 1/2 months(lengthwise) but was too slender for the 6-18months one so his head would slip through so we ended up with Merino Kids one as they are for 0-2 years fit him perfectly although he'll soon outgrow these lengthwise again.

I had this problem with one of the bags we have. I used a hair band to tie around the top of one of the arm holes (effectively making the neck and arm holes smaller) and it worked a treat.

I will be sewing it to make it more permanent now it's come out of the wash though.

I might try this. Can you explain it to me, like a bobble? Anything that means we can adapt the ones we have would be great, it's such a waste to not be able to use them. We looked at ikea ones today but they were just as bad. It seems any of them with the sort of v neck she can drop into

Easier to show you a photo! I haven't had time to sew it and she'll need it tonight, so I've re-tied it! You can see how the tied side armhole is shorter than the other side (look for the poppers) and it's reduced the neck slit length too.

Gives her something to suck on too... two birds with one stone.

Just make sure the metal bit is facing away from LO (obviously!!!)

The grobag ones are really long with small neck holes. They are quite expensive but I got mine 2nd hand for a few pounds. They have adjustable arm holes too.

Brilliant idea, am going to try that. Genius.

I've just bought one from Asda this morning. The neckhole is still ever so slightly big but the weight guide says she shouldn't use it til 18lbs and she's only about 16 now so it should be perfect after the summer ( summer lol). Am going to try that bobble trick on her 1 tog one.

I'm having this prob at the moment: DD is very nearly too long for the 0-6 month sleeping bags we have but her head is a bit small for the 6 months plus ones so i'm thinking of doing a small row of stitches that can be unpicked later.

If you do, let me see how you do it! I'm happy with the grobag one, that seems fine. It seems such a shame though as she has a beautiful pink one from Next and unless we can do something about the neckhole she won't get to use it.

Obviously it's better moneywise but it seems such a big jump to go from 0-6 to 6-18 months. It's very weird that something that fits them now will fit them in a year.
