We are going to spend a week in St Ives in October. Any suggestions for stuff to do with a 3 year old and a 13 months old? We probably won't feel comfortable to rent a car (driving on the other side - with our precious cargo), so we are wondering what there is to do that can be reached easily via public transportation.
Thanks so much!

St Ives Cornwall? Where are you coming from? :flower:
If it is Cornwall i know you dont want to hire a car but i strongly suggest it - public transport isnt fantastic. Wont go into detail now until you are more specific, dont want to waffle on unnecessarily!

Oh, and we live in the US, but I am European (not British)!

St Ives is lovely :) There is a train station there so you could get about to quite a few places by train, but make sure you check now far out of 'town' some of the stations are :)

We've been to Cornwall (Padstow) lots of times but always taken the car, but my sister goes often by train and they seem to manage great :)

Ah in that case i will waffle a bit then! St Ives as you may know is a little fishing village - there are more like that in Cornwall and they are beautiful and quaint. Built before cars took over so driving round them is not advisable although you will be here out of season so it might not be too bad. My only worry with you not driving is if you want to visit the rest of Cornwall you may find a lot of attractions a struggle to get to. Im not saying its not possible for eg the Eden project you can get the train and take a park and ride, i suggest researching attractions beforehand to see if they offer this service from a specific town.
What do you like doing? There are a lot of coastal walks that are lovely and they are best undertaken without a car otherwise you will have to double back on yourself ha! If its attractions etc check out https://www.flambards.co.uk/

There are lots of beautiful beaches around St Ives and hopefully you will be blessed with good weather to go paddling, grab a bucket and spade for the kids, go rockpooling and see what you can find, go crabbing (kits can be bought for a couple of pounds with bait to catch them in the harbour) depending on what is still running with it being the tail end of the season you could go on boat trips for pleasure or fishing! (yummy mackerel here).
Other things you should do are have fish and chips on the sea front (i will pre warn you, the sea gulls in St Ives will take food from you! Do not eat outside unless you are under shelter, they can be vicious. Unfortunately holiday makers think it is amusing to feed them and they have come to expect it and will do anything to get what you have, even ice cream!!! Most other places are not too bad just be careful especially with your children eating. Dont mean to scare you! Just wanted you to be aware so you can avoid the problem!!! Make sure to have a cornish pasty or two! My favourite is steak and stilton but the traditional ones are nice to. Try to find little independent bakeries instead of franchises if you can although most are nice really. Have a pint of real ale or three slurp...The sloop inn is quaint but be warned it is tiny!

There are animal sanctuaries like

https://www.sealsanctuary.co.uk/
https://www.newquayzoo.org.uk/
If you want to know anything else feel free to ask, told you i would waffle!

Above post covers everything I could add - just wanted to say I love St Ives! We go every year and it's our favourite place in the world. We drive there and then only use the car maybe twice when we're there.. if you are planning on a relaxing holiday just in St Ives then you won't need a car. Have a lovely time!

We went to Newquay on holiday this year and popped to St Ives for the day, it was lovely, you'll have a fab time. I recommend taking LO to Newquay zoo for the day (if its possible for you to get there), Callum loved it and it was a lovely day out xx

Wow, thanks for the long list! And for the seagull warning, yikes! We love nature, walks, beach, anything for the kids of course (is the Eden project something for kids that young?; those beach activities sound fabulous!), I've heard the town is lovely,...am just a bit worried about October weather. Any advice on what to do if the weather is awful? Especially with the two kids - we are staying with relatives in a tiny place and need to get them out of the flat.
Assuming the weather is good - or at least not awful, any special suggestions for coastal walks (especially ones easy to get to without a car)?

On yeah the seagulls are really vicious! It's usually ok out of season (we go in February and sometimes October and it's ok then) but in summer and when it's really busy it's a nightmare.

Interesting fact - you know the Alfred Hitchcock film Birds? Well the woman who wrote the book it was based on lived in St Ives for a while. Explains a lot!

Haha, I lost an ice cream to a seagull in st Ives too!

I love St Ives, it's such a beautiful town :D If you would like to see some lovely pictures of St Ives or get some ideas of places to visit, have a look at the 'Dreams Of Cornwall' Facebook page (see below for the link )

If you want to get out and about to explore Cornwall, there's a lovely train line which hugs the coast which goes from St Ives to St Erth. On route there are beautiful beaches at Carbis Bay and Lelant, and Hayle Estuary and Gwithian are nearby (you can get a bus link from Lelant or direct from St Ives) and are also stunning

St. Erth is on the main train line through Cornwall, so as far as Cornwall goes it's quite easy to get around :D You can go far West to Penzance and visit St Michaels Mount, a lovely castle on a tiny island open to the public. Or you could get the train to Truro, the Cornish City with a Cathedral and cobbled streets :D

The trains are pretty regular and run every 30-60 minutes depending on the time of day :D

In St Ives itself there's also the Tate Museum which is well worth a visit :D

Hope you have a lovely time and the late Indian sun comes out while you're here :flower:

xx

Jealous! :) The in-laws have a caravan on the coast up from St. Ives, but we haven't been since before the baby came. I'd also recommend renting a car if you can. We never have one, and while we're happy taking days getting anywhere by train it does seem like we're limited! I have Cornish ancestry and always want to visit the place where my relatives had a farm, but it's too far out of the way and we never make it. You wouldn't need a car right in St. Ives (like others have said, very narrow streets) but to get to attractions easily especially with two little ones in tow it might be easiest. Maybe if you don't feel comfortable driving you could 'borrow' one of your relatives to drive you to some places? The train up from St. Ives does have some beautiful coastal views, though!

I hope the weather is good for you, but it's probably a good idea to bring rainproof/windproof clothing along just in case! We were last there in September and while most of our visit was lovely, we had a couple days of gales and it was absolutely freezing! The wind can really get ripping along the beaches. Still Cornwall is just beautiful though and I'm sure you'll enjoy yourselves no matter what the weather! :flower:

Also there's two children friendly attractions really close to St Ives, Paradise Park is a bird sanctuary with an indoor soft play (just in case the weather isn't brilliant). It's in Hayle and the bus stops just a short walk away from the entrance, just ask for Foundry Square or St Michaels Hospital bus stops. You can see more on their website www.paradisepark.org.uk

There's also an indoor soft play centre called PlayZone a short walk from Carbis Bay train station, open on Saturdays, Sundays and school holidays in off-peak times, there website is www.play-zone.co.uk

Whilst I agree it's definitely easier to get around with a car, it's easy to get about from St Ives without one, I just wouldn't try to travel too far or you might spend too much time travelling rather than enjoying your day :D

Hope that helps and you have a lovely time :flower:

xx

If its blowing a gale go buy a kite! Plenty of fun to be had there! Last year we had a little heat wave in Oct, you never know you may be lucky this year! The Eden project has exhibits for kids and in the biomes there are interactive stations for kids and adults alike to learn about the plants/wildlife etc. If you and the kids are interested in that kind of thing its definitely worth a visit - if the weather is crap you might like it there because its hot and humid ha :haha: As for coastal walks, im not too sure about that area because its not the area i live in, but there will certainly be coastal paths linking up around st Ives. Oh and if your around gwithian and Godrevy lighthouse look out for seals, usually sunning themselves but to see them really clearly take a little pair of binoculars with you. :flower:

So jealousy saint Ives is amazing to have a holiday I had such fun we Whent to a John fowlers place it was HORRID but the holiday was wicked had such a good time we where out all day as the holiday place was nasty messy dirty small bla

Oooh excellent.... St Ives - we went in July and had a fab holiday. We did take the car but others have said its possible. Would recommend the following - dairyland / kynance cove / boat trip off st Ives pier/ watergate bay / seal sanctuary / paradise park no idea how easy these are via public transport. We didnt do Eden project as we felt it was too far out/too expensive and probably not much to offer a 22 month old but maybe in a few years.

O e of the best days was in st Ives on the beach / boat trip and splodge (the pottery painting cafe) where we painted a souvenir plate together. The treasure park was also a fav of mine but it's not for all.

Have a fab time

I love St Ives! I too have been a victim of the seagulls! (My cornish pasty :haha:) Brill choice of holiday, I'd dread the hills with a pushchair though!

I live in Penzance so very close to St Ives. It's not the best place for kids, but there's a place called Playzone in Carbis Bay, just outside of St Ives.

I don't go to St Ives much at all, ironically because of all the holiday makers

I would recommend getting a car, just because there's not a lot to do around here. I know I would be fed up pretty quickly if I was in St Ives, it's beautiful.. but I can't stand it there :haha:
