State, Private Or Home Schooling?

That something being whatever the topic of the conversation is. In the context in which I used the term, it was an attitude about oneself, a particular way in which people think of themselves. I have also discussed my attitude towards education in this thread.

I think in all the arguments or debates that go on here is the misconception that money necessarily makes the biggest difference in a child's life which is completely wrong. Having parents who are interested in you and your education and ensure that your happiness is paramount will always be the most important factor. That's what was the common thing in my life and those of my friends and we have all achieved i.e. degrees, careers etc. Money will never be a panacea for every issue that faces you in life and it certainly does not buy happiness (although being comfortable does help to some degree).

Totally agree. Money can only go up to a point. DH was private schooled and is against it for our kids. He didn't like it at all.

I find you cryptic so allow me to translate and correct me if I am wrong...Basically people who want private school are stuck up?

I thought she just meant that privately schooled people have a different view on things to state-schooled - not necessarily a good or bad thing, just different.

hope so . I will be sending mine to public as I have no choice. But nothing wrong with private if there was one here I would.

One of the reasons I'd love to send Carmen to private school- for high school, anyway- is because here, they don't answer to the state board as much as public schools do. I went to a private/Catholic high school for one year and I loved it. They answered to the Archdiocese, but the school itself had a lot more say in what they could and couldn't do. When a whole bunch of our students and teams won awards in academics, arts and athletics, the principal gave us the next Friday off as a reward. :) A public school would never be allowed that. We also had a mod-based college-style schedule, several study hall mods per day, and a lot of classes (Latin, anthropology, dance, marine biology) that weren't offered in public schools. Going to public school after that was a huge let down; we were treated like elementary school children rather than college-bound students, the classes were paced wayyyy back (you had to take an entrance exam to get into my first high school, so the academics were generally more intense), and it was hard to fit in as many classes since the schedule wasn't flexible. So, I had a much better experience with private school for high school; but I tend to prefer public school for elementary (rather than parochial) as I found it to be an easier environment to get along in. Just my experiences :flower:

I reckon jealousy is a major factor and a lot of ignorance. I actually think deep down if people did have the money alot of parents would send their children to private school!

And this here is the exact attitude I would work damned hard to ensure my child did NOT foster if he were to go to public school. I think it takes a certain kind of person to think that others are jealous of them, and unfortunately a great many of them are to be found in public schools, or are the product of a public school.

I have been lucky in my life in that I was awarded excellent grades in my GCSEs, A-Levels and in my degree and the only part of that education that had to be paid for was my degree. I would never be so bigotted as to think that someone would be jealous of me and I think a lot of that comes from the fact that I have always been surrounded by family and friends who are extremely well grounded and for that I am thankful.

In fact, reading some of the opinions on here has helped me make my mind up that I will be searching for a good local state school for my son and any subsequent children.

Have you read the rest of my posts with regard to this subject, or just concerntrated on that quote? Hmm.

Anyway, what you quoted me on is in fact true. Bigot  No, it's true. People have said on here if they had the money they would, people openly admit it in real life, one person infact told me they were jealous .. It's not an attitude, it's a belief that people would do it, and obvious fact that people do get jealous.

As I said, my Father grew up on an extremley rough council estate, they had nothing - and he's worked his way up to the top. As has my OH, he's come from a very poor background, and is doing so well. So I am thankful to have lots of different experiences, with down to earth people.

I really think you should have a read through all of my posts in here, as I don't think you quite understand where I'm coming from.

OMG off topic, but if you click the arrow next to the first post you posted in this link or quotes, it's a secret entrance to santa's grotto... and a post from 2008 lol!

I will send holly to state school, but not round here. I hope she gets in to a good one, if she gets a really bad one ill find a way to pay for a better school. :( shame all state school arnt good!!

Father Christmas did it :haha:

Perhaps I will them aob. TBH, education is something that is so very close to my heart that sometimes my mouth can run away with me. I am never normally drawn into arguments or debates on here and so I apologise for doing so this time. It was bad manners of me to do so.

Your opinion is still very much valid. It's a touchy subject for everyone, nobody is right or wrong :hugs:

I love finding weird bugs :D Like when random posts show up on the user cp from 2007. I didn't even know this place existed in 2007!!

I've had this debate before on here not so long ago so I won't say much about it other than that as a teacher in the state system (by choice, I might add. I have turned down a job at a private school) I believe 100% in state education and I can hand on heart say it is first rate in the majority of circumstances. Daisy will most definitely be state educated.

Are teachers in state and private paid drastically differently, does anyone know?

Not really. You don't actually have to have a teaching degree to work in a private school though. You do in a state school.

It's interesting that the teachers on here (there do seem to be a few) have all said state education. Can I ask why? Just interested as a fellow supporter of state education.
