State, Private Or Home Schooling?

I love how something as important a our child's education can cause a debate and again get twisted into the whole higher horse, I am better shit... I don't think I even want to finish reading this trash from both sides!

My brother went to a public school, worked his ass off on his own to get through university, has a masters in science, majoring in biology and is now a scientist! He has been published in many medical journals well before the age of 30! I know a girl who went to a private baptist school and is a slutty pot headed moron! Nothing makes you better, it's how you raise your children, not what you pay for the fecking education that determines how they turn out. If you raise them with a stick up their ass... it will stay there, rich, poor, upper-middle class, lower-middle class, homeless, or a Hilton! Gaaaaaahhhhhh rant over, carry one ladies :flower:

I think this is what most people are trying to say

Slightly unrelated but I saw people talking on fb the other day with a conversation basically like this:

"Have to start going to church so we can get the baby christened so he can go to a good school"

Theres noway we would be able to afford to send our children to private school, therefore it will be state school.
If we win the lottery or anything then obviously thats different but couldn't agree more with the previous statement that someone made regarding if a child wants to do well they will do no matter how/where they are educated.

It happens all the time in our area.

All the decent schools are church schools.

My friend did this. Doesnt sit right with me.

both me and my sister went to public schooling from nursery, and for us its been great, we've both did really well and my sister is finishing her second degree, our parents had a big sway on us though and always made sure school was important for us so I know that's a big factor but the state schools were we lived were awful and some violent, Rowan will be going to a public school and so will any other children we have which is why we might stick to 2, I do think its down to preference, if we couldn't afford public we would go for a grammar school, also nearly all public schools offer help with fees and bursaries too for anyone that wants to but can't afford it :flower:

Fact is, irrespective of whether people can or cannot afford private school, the best schools imo are grammar schools who take people on ability not money. I guess the state grammar school I attended was very much like a private school as parents supported the school and we had excellent facilities and opportunities as a result and attracted the best teachers. Would I have done as well at a comprehensive - I think so although it would have been more difficult. There's no jealousy here - we could afford private education but I feel a state education system should, and does in many cases, provide an excellent standard of education.

Gosh really, are there not background checks done...? Thats really unfair!

My MIL did this. She got the youngest three christened so they could go to a religious school :nope: Seems a bit pointless to me but hey.

If I can afford it, then LO would go to a private school, if money was an issue, then he will go to a Grammar School. If he can't get in to the schools we want him to go to and the rest were shit then home schooling it is.

I really just don't see the point of sending children to crappy schools

It depends on what the alternative would be schools wise. I'm uncomfortable with this kind of thing but if the alternative would be Ruby going to a very poor school I would do it.

MY LO and any other children we have wil go to state school. I want my children to learn how to mix with other children and all different types of people from different backgrounds. I don't want him to feel above or look down on anyone. Money is totally irrelevant, it makes no difference to a child how much you pay for his/her schooling, I feel a lot of the time it's a status thing for the parents. Myself and my husband both attended a state school and we have managed to do well for ourselves. It doesn't matter where you are schooled, it's all about the effort and willingness to learn. You get out what you put in.

Some schools excel at some things but not at others. Like the secondary school i went to is more veered towards languages and so has become a language academy and does REALLY well in it...I chose to do both A-Level French and German and then wanted to go on to study German at uni...but that probably only came about cos they really pushed languages on you.

However other subjects they dont so well in...like sports or sciences.

But i didnt think state schools were allowed to take preference to some subjects over others?

I think they are, I know my old school is calling itself a 'language college' these days.

Most state schools now are some sort of "college", Sport, Arts, IT etc

So doesnt that even make choosing a state school a bugger, cos if its not an all-rounder and your child isnt that great at there chosen subject they focus on then your child is more likely to do less well.

I dont think i agree with state school becoming more specialised...

I presume it all comes down to funding.

I don't really like league tables either, people say exams are getting easier and I don't think they are. Teachers can pretty much work out what is going to be on the exams - kids aren't taught subjects, they're taught to pass exams. Get good grades so the schools look good and get more funding.

I agree with a lot of what you say in your post apart from this bit:

State schools wouldnt lose the best teachers to private

In my experience, private schools do not have the best teachers. I have worked with some fantastic teachers in the state sector and I know of plenty of terrible teachers in the private sector.

I think that any school, state or private will have its mix of good and bad teachers. The difference is that teachers in private schools are teaching much smaller classes and do not have to deal with the same problems that state sector teachers do which enables them to focus more on their teaching.

Agreed. Private does not mean the best teachers. In my experience, the best teachers choose to work in the State Sector because they enjoy the challenge.
