State, Private Or Home Schooling?

I agree with a lot of what you say in your post apart from this bit:

State schools wouldnt lose the best teachers to private

In my experience, private schools do not have the best teachers. I have worked with some fantastic teachers in the state sector and I know of plenty of terrible teachers in the private sector.

I think that any school, state or private will have its mix of good and bad teachers. The difference is that teachers in private schools are teaching much smaller classes and do not have to deal with the same problems that state sector teachers do which enables them to focus more on their teaching.

Agreed. Private does not mean the best teachers. In my experience, the best teachers choose to work in the State Sector because they enjoy the challenge.

What does that tell you???????

As a state school teacher for the last 12 years, it tells me that I have worked with some of the most talented and dedicated staff that you could ever wish to meet.

Challenge is not a bad thing. Very many private schools do not accept children with Additional Support Needs so the challenges of state school teaching come in many shapes and sizes.

EXACTLY. Yes, maybe they are fab teachers but they have left to go to schools in SPECIAL MEASURES for a challange! I went to a secondary school before being homeschooled which was in special measures and it was horrible! Yes, some of the teachers were amazing, but the other pupils were disgusting! They spat on me, punched me, mocked my accent because I can actually speak properly...threatened to come and "chop my horses tail off then stab him" because I wouldn't let half my class come and ride him when none of them had ever been on a horse in their lives :dohh: Apparently I was being a spoilt little rich girl who wouldn't share my things....FFS.
I wasn't even that RICH just not like THEM. My mum worked hard! I have severe anxiety issues because of those students! They made fun of my weight, said I looked like a scarecrow just because I was skinny. I actually got even skinner because of all the anxiety and developed a massive eating disorder which I still have today.
I will NEVER send my son to a school like that!
My mum couldn't send me to a better school because we had just come back from Australia and I would have been on a year long waiting list for all the good schools around. It was dire. I don't remember a single decent child....

Sorry I am not sure what you mean by the first bit. One of those days for my brain i'm afraid.

I have never been in a school where there was not 'one decent child'. Never and trust me, I have worked in some scary areas. I just can't write off children like that or use that kind of terminology in relation to children. I understand that you had a very negative experience but that is not my experience of working in state schools.

if we can afford it when it come sto it all of our children will be privately educated!

I'm hoping we will emigrate to Australia at some point in the future, where private school is a lot cheaper and a lot of people use.

Both of my younger brothers attend a private school there and the school is phenomenal!!

After my experiences of state school i do NOT want my children attending, i'd much rather them go somewhere where we get a say and where we can be confident that their needs are met and they are being helped to acheive their full potential!

We wouldn't send to a religious school simply because i believe they should have the right to choose if they want to have a religion, and what religion that will be.

The main reason we will send to private is the same reason we have done everythign we have with our kids.. because we want to give them what we believe is best

I know state schools have decent kids. I meant the one I went to which was in special measures honestly had a horrible load of kids....maybe it was just that school because it was so bad. I know not all state schools are like that.

£15,000? Oh...

On the website it says approx £4000 - £5000 a term so yeah....maybe more than that even because of all the add ons like music tuition and materials x

I'm sure St Pauls/Eton/harrow are a hell of a lot more!

I went to a church of england school but in no way was religion forced onto us, we learned about other religions and were encouraged to have lively discussions about whether or not we believed in God, etc.
I am not religious and ideally I would not like Ruby to go to a church school but atm that seems to be the best available option in our area and I don't think it would be hinder her in deciding for herself what to believe in.

I genuinely expected it to be ALOT more....ALOT more....:-s

Only the most expensive school in the country (Eton) is all that much

St Pauls is the BEST school in the country in terms of education and it's only £5000 a term!

Evan will go to state school.

I went to state school and got all GCSE's A-C. My mum does firmly believe that if I had've gone to the local Grammar School I'd have done better but I passed them all anyway!

I am a teacher in a state secondary school, the school I teach in isn't wonderful has a very high rate of SEN but I love it and their are some amazingly talented kids there. We have one boy who has been accepted to some dance school in London and when he is 13 is auditioning for Billy Elliott (He is only 11 so too young) We also have two brothers who have trained with the British skiing team and are aiming to represent the UK at the winter Olympics.

Paul McCartney sent Stella to the school I teach at :D

I have been brought up in a very socialist family.

Most importantly I don't and won't ever have the money. Evan can go to the local boys school though cos the mixed school is actually pretty rubbish, but 11 years is a long way off :)

I am not jealous of people who are privatley educated. Where I was brought up we have lots of Private schools (Whitgift and Trinity to name two) So I know quite a few people who went to these schools, some did shit and it was a waste, others excelled and none are particularly snobby although I am sure many are!!

I agree.
I went to a C of E school after leaving my public/private school early (it was an all girls school and what a bunch of bitches they were!!!) and neither my family or I am in any way religious.
About as religious as it got was singing a hymn in morning assembly once a week.
My son isn't at a C of E school but he has recently visited a mosque, learnt all about Christianity and can name most of the hindu gods, I think a large chunk is cirriculum full stop.
He can believe as he chooses, thats his choice, I would voice my opinion though if I thought he was in anyway being led too far into it, but I would with anything.
He has a Jehova (sp?) witness in his class and some Plymouth Brethren in the year so it really does cater for all.

These terms confuse me! Private schools are not as common here in Canada as they seem to be in the UK, and they are usually religion-based with few academic exceptions (and those cost upwards of $15-20,000/year).

So he's just going to a regular school with whoever lives nearby, whatever term that may be!

i don't for one second think that religion is forced in a religious school, however i think school should be for schooling and a 'religious school' is offputting for us because there MUST be some sort of structure/relation to the religion that the school is and we would rather not.
Religion IMO is something that LO's need not be worried about

We'd love to be able to pay for private/public schooling for Fin and any siblings... which might be an option for us if DH continues to advance in his career as he has so far. If it's not something we can afford then we'll plan our next house purchase to be near a very good state school. There is no way in hell I'll send my Children to most of the schools in Swindon lol.

Oh and Religious schools are simply not an option for us. DH and I are strongly athiest and we do not want them to be in any strong religious setting at such an easily influenced age xx

I do agree with you there!

My primary schoiol which dosnt exist any more was run by nuns and we had religion imposed on us. I have no religion for mmy children and they will go to an intergrated primary school though by secondary school they will probably need christened as they are all catholic here the good ones and you have to be baptised to get into a school here. Like black mail really . My mum throws this in my face a lot that my son is not baptised there for cant get into a catholic school and should be. But I want him to choose when he is older and learn about all religions.

I think different strokes for different folkes here. Some will home school and thats up to them that works for them I just aint smart enough to home school and want them out meeting friends. I don't think home schooling is wrong like with all things dosnt suit everyone but live and let live.

If there was private schools around here I would pay. But think its public.

Sorry to take this slightly off topic from previous comments (since it's moving fast) but as this is one of the threads (one of many) that is coming to our attention can I just remind you that your all suppose to be adults? WHY do I have to remind you anyway? ](*,)Answer: because some of the members recently just seem to be squabbling for the sake of it, then follows childish behaviour "report me then", "are the admin apart of the clique thats why it's ok" blah blah blah! NO we are not impressed but someone tell me how we 'tell off' grown women who are using the board as parents, some even older than ourselves. It's getting difficult and the tone around BabyandBump is NOT being unnoticed.

GROW UP, do I have to say any more?

Just to reply to a comment earlier in the thread, in my case, I am in no way jealous of people that are sending their children to private schools. I believe that's the attitude a lot of private school pupils have. 'You're not as good as me, and you wish you could be. You're jealous' sort of thing.

I didn't mention anywhere that I couldn't afford it. That's not the case at all.
We have quite a famous private school in my town, Bolitho school. I know a lot of what happens there.. it's not something I'd want my daughter to be involved with. One girl joined my class in my 'commoner' school because she was bullied endlessly because she didn't have a horse. She was 100x happier when she got away from there. We're still friends now.

I feel very strongly about this sort of thing.

:haha: I was bullied at the STATE school I went to because I DID have a horse. So bizzaire...
