Stockings - do you go by gift size or cost?

We have a big sack that Santa brings in the morning then only a few bigger presents from us so they do tend to get bigger and pricier items in their sacks. I don't go on price of each gift but price of the whole combined sack instead.

I tend to spend no more then £30 on all of the stocking presents x

I go by size and pick up things small enough to fit but also try to spend £50 or less on all the items x

I usually got by size of what will fit in. The boys are still young enough that they don't understand things costing more or less, so I can still get away with some things being super cheap and others more expensive and they have no idea. I may need to adjust as they get older, but for now, I just go with whatever fits in the stockings.
