You ever try Pilates? That is a great overall workout that engages your core through most of it (many DVD's around that workout)... personally, I take a power class at the gym, Zumba and Step- but they also offer specific core classes that are tough too!
Planks are great for your core- and the more muscles you engage the better! I don't like planks- LOL- they are hard, but great for your entire stomache.
