sun beds - your views

I would never use. I am very pale and just burn and frekle anyway so would look silly. I would worry about health risk plus dont want premature wrinkles. My gosh i know some older people who regularly tanned and their skin is like leather now. My family we are all fairly pale. My dad and sister do tan but none of us did the tanning. My grandmother who lived all over the place including egypt and cyprus but avoided tanning is 90 and looks so much younger. I personally slap the factor 50 on as soon as sun out or burnt in 10 minutes and i remember the painful blisters of burn from when child

hmm...
alot of people are saying 'no they age you more and give you skin cancer'... so does the sun? so if your going to, say go on holiday and sit in the sun most of the day, why not go on the sunbed occasionally?

I used to use them, when i could afford it, id use them maybe once a week, sometimes not every week though and a max of 6-9 mins a time (more so 6 but did 9 a few times), i used to moisturise well after. The reason i first started was because i had bad eczema my doctor said sunbeds help clear it, although she never advised i use one..
i used them for quite a while, and i dont regret it, my OH wouldnt let me now, he hates the thought of them, and for him i dont :) although if i get married i would use one to tan up a bit before hand..

Fake tan.. erghh, tacky and horrible, it stinks, leaves patches on you (which im sure users cant see) it sticks in your pores leaving darker dots all over,, far too fake and noticable, id much rather be pale or use a sunbed that wear fake tan..

When i'm out in the sun, i cover myself in suncream. MIL and SIL use sunbeds and apply nothing. Therein lies the biggest difference.

Yeah that's why there is sun lotion...

:dohh:

Many sunbeds give out greater doses of UV rays than the midday Mediterranean sun.

Most people who go out in the sun use sun cream and cover up where needed.

Those of us who said no to tanning beds also are very big on using sun protection outside as well....I always use sunscreen when outside in the sun, and make sure my family does too. We don't go out unprotected from the sun's UV rays. Whether sitting out in the sun on vacation, out on a walk, at a park, whatever, doesn't really make a difference, we use sunscreen. So not really sure where you got that assumption?

^^ when i go on holiday i don't sit out in the midday sun! Plus i'm assuming people don't put factor 50 on to sit in a sunbed? :haha:
I, and plenty of other people, take precautions to make being outside safe in the sun. Using a sunbed is not the same thing!

My mother in law had skin cancer as did her dad

My hubby who used to hardly ever put cream on now wheres sunblock as he doesn't want to end up with it too... Though prob the damage has already been done

Also wanted to add, my Mum wears false tan, she gets spray ons or does it herself and she always looks fantastic.

It's never to late to stop further damage though.

Each to their own but no, I wouldn't use them. I'm naturally pale, I don't think it makes me unattractive, I can't understand the appeal of a tan but we know their is a risk so and I'd rather be pale than have to deal with skin cancer.

Dispute being pale I don't burn easy, so I hardly ever wear sunscreen, which I should, but I'm joy a sun worshiper so I don't spend a great deal of time in it.

Mu husband is ginger and burns very easily, so he plasters himself and the kids on sunscreen and reminds me to do it too, if we go away abroad or are intending to be out in the sun I also wear sunscreen.

I like the fact my kids are pale and not exposed to too much son, the longer I can go without them ever getting burnt the happier I'll be.

The sun does have benefits and is a great source of vit d, but you don't have to bake in the son to get that benefit.

I hear stories that they can course skin cancer etc but i know plenty that have used them and are fine. I cant use them cus i suffer with ocular albinism so no good for my skin

I know loads of smokers who are so far fine.
What a silly thing to say.

whats so bloody silly? I am just saying my option

Here are some facts... my friend works as an MA for an Oncologist (skin cancer specialist):

Sun beds are more intense than the sun (in the short time span they are used)- which is why they work faster. Which is why it can increase your odds for developing skin cancer. A big factor for this is lack of protection (i.e. sunscreen)- since most people wouldn't go into a sun bed with sun block on.

Living in the NorthWest- a lot of people here forget that cloud cover doesn't mean safety. Thus, many people go daily with NO sunscreen and the rates of skin cancer are actually higher here than in California. Where the sun is out most days- and more people protect themselves daily with sunscreen.

Another big factor is sun burns- especially when young. Plus, if your naturally pale with freckles (like I am). Just means your at higher risk than someone that naturally tans or has never been burnt.

With that said-- there will always be exceptions to the "rule". There are plenty of people that live long lives smoking, drinking, sunning etc... while others develop cancer young, even though they avoided alocohol, ciggarettes or sun. There is NO guarantee.

I just live my life assuming I'm the "rule" not the exception. Yes, I like a bit of color during the summer months. I'd love to go lay in a warm sun bed- I won't lie! lol. But it's just not worth it to me. So I get spray tanned- and it works for me. Plus, I don't have the time in my day anymore to use a sun bed! haha.

While this is true, many of the cases of skin cancer in darker skinned people, or people who tan easily, is because of the misconception that they don't burn, so don't need sunscreen. I always have to point that out, because, honestly, people really do think that. Black, Asian, latin, etc, doesn't make you immune to skin damage and skin cancer. Your skin doesn't have to get "sunburned" for the UV rays to cause damage to your skin cells leading to cancer.

When I was doing my masters, I was interning at a pathology lab and was shocked by the number of skin cancer cases on dark skinned people, and that was one of the take home things I learned. EVERYONE needs sun protection, regardless of whether your skin type burns or not.

I realised this when i went to spain lol

I said no to sun bed but i dont tan outside either. Myself, dh and lo slap on factor 50 when outside in sun. It was sunny this morning when out so sun cream went strait on as we all burn fairly quickly. My fil used to put cooking oil on his skin to tan. I hate to think what damage he has done

My mom and sister used to put baby oil on to tan faster, makes me cringe to think about it now:wacko: Both regret it now. My mom never goes out now without sunscreen, as she already has visible sun damage (wrinkles, sun spots) from doing things like that when she was younger.

I've never been on one. I never saw the point but at the age of 31 and still having acne on my face, chest and back, it's a tempting idea because UV is the only thing that clears it. Not with newly tattooed skin though :haha:

1) It does help a little. I don't have great skin but I went on sunbeds for a while before my wedding and my skin was perfect!

2) Get yourself to your GP hun. You shouldn't have to live with it. I only went a few months ago after thinking I'd grow out of it for over a decade, and my skin is almost perfect now and I feel so much better.
