Well, well, well....I can finally breathe a little better now. Had my u/s and the little heart was at 168 bpm and was 8.2 weeks in! Cried like a baby from joy!!! I have been feeling sick, tired and more sick and more tired. I am 42, due at the end of March and can't wait! Just very nervous now for the amneo!!! Anyone share their experiences with me? I am going to have it mid-Sept. I know that the baby will not feel a thing and that the chances of m/c are one in 500....but does it hurt? What kind of results should I expect at this age?

Congratulations,

I had one done and if I would to have anothere baby I would do it again. It just hurts a little but nothing terrible. They will numb the area A little. And it is over in like 5 min! Just stay very still and be calm:). Try to rest for about 3 days after the procedure. I felt a little cramping after the procedure but they said it was normal.

Hope everything goes well for you:).

Congratulations. I'm 40 years old, 41 next month. My 5th child due end of Jan/Feb. My youngest will be 9years old when this one is born. I have opted not to have the Amniocentesis because my Downes risk was very low when all my bloods and Nuchal Fold tests were combined. I phoned my hospital about my results who told me that they will keep scanning but I should not worry. I also got told the risk of miscarriage with an Amnio is 1/100 and my Downes risk was nearly 1/1000. I know an Amnio would help stop me worrying but I feel I cannot take the miscarriage risk.
Good luck with your Amnio. xx

I opted out of the amnio because of the miscarriage risk and because my decisions about care would not be altered by the results. So unfortunately cannot tell you... but do wish you a very smooth procedure!

I had an amnio a few weeks ago. I am in the us, so maybe a bit different. First off, I went to a genetic specialist for mine. They did not use numbing but as for feeling the needle go in, I really didn't. After it was in, I felt a bit of cramping while fluid was being withdrawn. Not terrible. The entire procedure lasted less than 5 minutes. The odds of miscarriage go way down if the person performing the procedure has a lot of experience. This is VERY important. It was not completely painless but would I do it again? In a heartbeat! I am 40, was told my odds were 1/65, and I have anxiety and just needed to know! I found out within 10 days that I am carrying a healthy baby girl and I can relax and enjoy the rest of my pregnancy. Would I have altered my decision to carry this baby if there was something wrong? I am not sure. But I am sure that I made the right decision in having it done. And the post about resting for a few days...important. My doctor told me to rest for 24 hours and I got up and started cleaning etc after that. I started cramping and had to rest. Might as well be safe and take it easy for a few days. Good luck and try not to worry!

Thanks Livsmom, I got results today of 1/65 due to low PAPP-A and have an amino on the 26th November. Fx all will be ok x

Fx for you! Try not to worry about the procedure! I was not as bad as people make it out to be. Just remember to rest afterwards for a full day or two. Keep me posted. :hugs:

Forgot to update! A perfect healthy little girl. Amnio was fine, the wait for results was worse!

Congrats! How is your pregnancy going? Are you feeling better?

Yes thanks, apart from the stress of the results it's been an easy pregnancy so far. Not long for you now Hun, are you ready...?!
