Me and OH currently get w/t credits and c/t credits. I've got a partime job now Josh is 4 months old to help pay for the wedding, rang them and told them and she said that my tax credits will go down by £2 per week based on 10 hours

Rang them back up again today and said Im contracted for 10 hours but will do overtime, do I have to tell you everytime I do more than 10 hours and she said aslong as your doing less than 16 hours a week and your joint income is less than £32000 then we don't have to know...Just tell us in April that you've worked..

So two different things being said by the same helpline number!!!!

Do I have to tell them and declare I've worked or don't have to tell them cos its less than 16 hours and 32000...

CONFUSED!!!

you would need to provide an average of the hours that you work, if it varies then take an average over a four week period.

As long as you provide the average then you dont need to inform them of any change to weekly hours long as the average is the same. Also, work out an average of your inc to the best of your ability (always better to over estimate)

hope that helps

I did work for tax credits for 2 years. Basically your tax credits are based on your household income from the previous tax year, based on current year circumstances. If you earn more wages, you are entitled to less tax credits. You only need to notify them when you avergae hours worked out mean that its over 30 hours (if your partner is working less than 30 hours) as this means you are entitled to a 30 hour element. Your tax credits will never be a fixed ammount, unless your circumstance are exaclty the same and correct for the whole tax year. Your entitlement will be based on the previous years income, providing your income does not go more than £25000 more than this. They give you a figure £32000, so Im presuming, apologies if Im wrong, this is the ammount of previous years income with 25000 added on. If your income is expected to be over this ammount, then your current year tax credits, will be based on your current year income. Hope that made sense? x

Ooooh thats how they worked the 3200 out! OH was working part time cos he was at college.

So I don't have to tell them Im how many hours im doing as its less than 30 and less than 3200?

I'll give them a ring in the morning, On average its 10hrs a week.

erm its all based on your circumstances, so as you have a baby, either of you has to work over 16hours to qualify for working tax credits (but do not have to work at all for child tax credits). And if either of you go over 30 hours let them know. The most important thing is your income. They will pay you based on your previous years income, if you think you will earm 25000£ more than this, then let them know in order to avoid overpayment as they will unfortunatly ask for it back ! So if you do lots of overtime and think you might earn 32000 between both of you from 6th April 2009 to 5th April 2010, then definatly let them know, as when it comes to renewals, they will want the figure from your p60 :) x
