Hi

I am a bit worried about telling my employer i am pregnant as i have only worked for the company since April 07. I have read contract etc and i am within my rights to have maternity leave etc etc but i know my boss will be pee'd off, any advise?

Your boss cannot discriminate because you are pg.
Make sure youre versed up with your rights so that you can quote anything if you boss tries to be difficult.

You don't legally have to tell him untill 15weeks before it's due. But if you want to tell him now, there's nothing he can do! He might suprise you and be excited for you :)

Was thinking of telling him when i get to three months, but its getting the time off to go to MW/scans etc without him finding out as i have used all my leave up, and have already said i have been to docs and dentist a few times already! Don't want them getting too suspicous. I wouldn't have been bothered at my last place of work as i worked with all women but here i am the only female working with seven blokes!

he can't stop you from going to the doctors though. if he asks why you're going say "women stuff." LOL

yeah, suppose if i have to go i have to go, they can't sack me right?! Will have to try and relax about telling them, i suppose being all males i could play on it abit and get them running round after me more! lol

I told my boss today and she was thrilled for me, she said it before i had a chance to!

I've to get a risk assessment done on me, and i've to slow down, she was on at me all day to slow down as i probably overdo it anyway.

if shes going to stop me doing a lot of things its going to really bore me at work as it is all pretty physical but i need to remember why im doing it

bite the bullet and tell your boss, i was panicking about it but she was great

good luck!!xx

I started my job In june and told them I was pregnant in October. I was worried, but they can't sack you for being pregnant and they cant treat you any differently as to how they would before. Except if your job is unsafe to do eg if you were a roofer or something.

Your company should have a health and safety policy so make sure you ask for that, and make sure you've read up on your rights before you go in and tell them. Maybe if you're part of a union take a union reprasentative in with you?

Im sure theyll be fine honey, although I know its a bit of a daunting thing to have to do.

I told my boss I was pregnant at 6 weeks and she was so happy and excited for me!! She mentioned nothing about me taking maternity leave yet, but that time is so far off I'm sure she's not worried about it right now.

As another poster said, your boss cannot discrimate if you are pregnant. It's against the law.

Good luck!! Let us know what happens!

I was a bit nervous as well to tell my boss. I have worked for the same company for over 2 years, however less than a month before I found out I was pregnant, I accepted a job offer at another location, same company. The only people I knew there were men, and I was very nervous. It wasn't nearly as bad as i thought. He has children, so he knew what his wife went through, and was really supportive. You never know how people are going to react, but at least in this case, you know that if they act poorly toward you, they can be fired. Good luck hun!!

i was scared bout telling me boss...its pretty much a small salon, family environmant so it was jsut like tellin ur parents over again lol they were great and tell me if i need to sit down more ec so im happy i told them now i cqan talk about it with them etc it makes it alot easier ;) the longer u leave it 1 the harder it will be for them adn 2 the more difficult it makes it for you...good luck :)

Yeah plus I know most employers will appreciate it more if you'll tell them earlier than those 15weeks before you're due.

Hi there,
Well, if it helps you I'm an HR Manager and I'm pregnant, or at least I hope I still am but that's a different thread discussion!
If it helps you all out there, up until now I've seen pregnancy from the employer's perspective so I can now see things from both sides.

Pregnant women are the most protected in employment law so that is the first piece of reassurance. The second is that no employer can treat a pregnant women any less favourably on the grounds that she is pregnant. In other words, that's direct sex discrimination. If you're worried in any way about any treatment you have or haven't received from your employer try the 'but for...' test, ie. ask yourself, "but for the fact that I'm pregnant, would this or wouldn't this have happened?"

Get your employer to do a risk assessment and if you work for a small company that doesn't offer them, take care of yourself with all the safety advice we get from our GP.

Some companies pay enhanced maternity pay and if you're employer does, you're one of the lucky ones. Statutory Maternity Pay (SMP) is very low, currently £112/week and you have to pay PAYE and NI on it.

Good luck everyone!

I would wait until 3 months to tell them. otherwise everyone else is correct, it is very illegal to discriminate against pregnant women.
