Are you going to get the tests done re Downs etc that they offer you?

I have been reading my pregnancy book/notes the MW gave me and they offer you all sorts of tests done by bloods, at around the 12 week date i think......

I turned the tests down. DH and I had discussed it beforehand and we both agreed that no matter the results of the tests we would keep the baby, and since we would keep the baby we figured there was no reason to put ourselves through the stress and worry of testing.

I had a genetic test done that screened for Down's, spina bifida and other neural tube defects.
It consisted of 3 parts (ultrasound at 12 weeks and blood work at 13 and 16 weeks).
I got the final result of 1:32 000 for Down's and even lower for other defects.
I just needed a piece of mind.

hmmmm i'm in two minds, coz it would put your mind at rest but then what if its wasn't what you was expecting.... gonna have to think this through some more!

i turnt it down as i knew people who had the tests and said it changed thier opinons on thier baby. me and oh have agreed we love this baby no matter what xx

I won't be having the tests. Didn't have them last time either.

having worked with people with these disabilities for years, I've always said I wouldn't have the test. Its just a personal choice at the end of the day

I never took the tests either.

I did but only because I was rushed. I went to my doctors Thurs to confirm preg (was on the injection) and got a scan the next day and being that quick OH couldnt come with me and scan showed I was 15 + 1 and seeing as you are supposed to have your triple test at 12 weeks  I had to choose there and then wether to have it done or not. I changed my mind about 10x but I thought have it done - I can decide WITH my OH when the envelope arrives wether or not to open it :)

xx

We've already decided that if the results of the test wouldn't make a difference as to how we'd procede with the pregnancy it's not worth doing...for Downs, it wouldn't made a difference. But, since there are things they can do correct spina bifida, it seems like that might be worth it.

DH and I decided the very same thing, and also turned down all those tests. We will be having the anatomical/sex U/S though first week in January.

I am not going to have the tests I think it is your own choice & we have decided against it.

you know I'm in two minds.
If it's just a blood test I may well have it. It would not determine wether I keep my baby or not, we've decided we will whatever, but it would give us a chance to prepare mentally etc. Obviously a Downs syndrome child can be a lot more work and psychologically testing.
I would not have the later test - the amniocentesis (or howver you spell it) as there is a risk of miscarriage.
For Downs they can do the blood and check certain neck measurements which give an indication, without harming baby, so I think I'd probably opt for that - for peace of mind or for preparing.

I'll love this baby not matter what but figure I might as well give myself a head start if we need to get organized with extra help or reading up etc.

You are not normally offered blood tests unless you are of a certain age, you ask for them or the scan is not clear enough to detect the fluid at the back of the neck.

But it is a very personal choice......I never had them the 1st time round, (I was offered as I was late going to the Doctor's so missed the 12 weeks scan) and I would not have had them if offered with my last pregnancy. x

Apparently they offer them to everyone now, its in the book the MW gave me, unless thats just my area....

Its the blood one, not the other one done later in pregnancy, i think it just tells you, you have for e.g. 1 in 10,000 chance ...

I was asked this question at the hospital yesterday and i turned them down.

We will love this baby no matter what so it seems pointless to have the tests.

Although i am at greater risk of Downs as i am now 39 years old we still dont care either way.

i dont understand why people wouldnt have the blood test - at least gives you a chance to prepare and read up on extra care etc that might be needed?
It's not necesarily about abortion. I see it as being prepared and responsible.

sorry that sounds judgemental - it isnt meant to be!!!!! I'm just wondering why people wouldnt want to prepare for the future. To me it's like knowing the sex of the baby...I cant see what good it is to wait, I'd like to know now now now so I can start preparing! :)

For me it's not the blood test that worries me, it is the amniocentisis. As someone posted earlier it can cause a person to miscarry and the doctors told my mom when she had me (of course this was 27 years ago) but they told her that it could cause abnormalities itself. In my mind I figure that chances of there being any problems/downs syndrome etc. are very low. We are both young and relatively healthy, neither of our families have any history of downs syndrome or other birth defects. I've read cases of women who get the blood tests done and their results say that they are at a high risk of having a downs syndrome baby and than their baby is perfectly healthy. I see no need to put myself through that kind of stress. Especially when in the end it doesn't matter as my DH and I would not consider an abortion. I do understand why people would want the tests and I'm not being judgmental, for me though it just isn't an option.
