Thoughts on this....??

You know the only thing that bothers me is the cows milk is not designed for children thing. Its not designed for adults either but i'm sure most of us are happy to stick it in our tea and coffee.

Well, I think we can all agree that cow's milk is not designed anyone but cows. However, I think most of us can also agree it's no big deal if adults OR children drink it. The issue is why is that okay and human breast milk, designed for humans, from it's natural source, is not okay past a certain age? Why should a woman make her child wean from it when they are not ready - only to turn around and give them a cup of cow's milk instead?

IMO it makes zero sense to wean a child off it's own mother's milk only to turn around and give it a cup of cow's milk. I look at my little guy running around with a cup of cow's milk and think, "boy, that is actually kind of weird that I did that?"

Thats what i was trying to say...only not so well :haha: xx

I don't want to look like a bitch! Aha it was genuine curiosty! And obviously its not better than breastmilk, i just hate the not designed for humans arguement because we'd be happy to give it to ourselves or our children when they are older thats all :)

But if you believe so strongly that its wrong, you wouldn't drink it at all?

It isn't that it is wrong, it's just that it is strange that while we are so accustomed to drinking milk which is naturally designed for a calf that we don't see any problem with it, the thought of consuming milk genetically designed for our own species causes such outrage.

Its not the same. We drink milk as a drink. Milk to a baby is food. Milk to a calf is food. This is a crucial difference!

A drink is just a liquid form of calories, it's still food.

Cowsmilk is "food" as well. I don't see the reasoning behind your thought that breastmilk isn't exactly the same.

Phew! Just got through the whole thread. I porsonaly dont have a problem with breast feeding untill the age of 4, each to.there own in my opinion but I personaly wouldnt do it as it just wouldnt sit well.with me.
Though I do think feeding from the breast at the age of 4 is a bit odd as like many on the thread have already said I wouldnt be giving them a bottle at that age so why should they have the breast? By the age of 4 kids should realy be drinking from a cup to get them ready for school. Just my opinion though. Like I said each to there own.

If I had managed to BF I would have gone on for as long as my baby would have wanted it, although I can't say I would have done it in public at age 4, mainly because at that age it is a comfort thing and I would have felt uncomfortable. If I saw someone else doing it though I would NEVER ever say something - that's just rude and old-fashioned.

I would be interested to now at what age (relative to humans obviously as cows life spans are different) calves stop drinking their mothers milk?

xx

Hmm, its not "necessary" to eat broccoli, fruit, drink water etc with our marvellous technological advances... But noone would argue that its not highly beneficial for health. Similarly, breastfeeding (at any age, particularly older) isnt "necessary" these days, that is not the point. The point is that it is highly beneficial no matter how old the child, abd some mums xhoose to take advantage of that. Simple...

I am afraid it is 'necessary' to drink water, eat greens/fruit, as it contains essential vitamins and minerals that a tablet will not be able to give you, as its absorbed totally differently. It would affect growth, repair of skin and brain and physical development. In addition if we didnt drink water, or somethings with water, we would be dead within three days.

Water is very necessary. Without it, we die.

What? Do you think bf toddlers just have bf all day and not have other drinks via a cup?

No no lol sorry that didnt make sence
Thats what typing with a newborn on your lap does lol
What I meant was I dont.see why they couldnt have there breast milk expressed into a cup

Expressing is a faff and not every woman can express. I can't.

I would never waste my time expressing. I technically could, but why on earth WOULD I? Breastfeeding is also about the bonding experience.

yeah, that's what I always say, why SHOULD women express if they don't want to? A bottle is not the same as the breast!

I think it is pretty neat to say my LO has never been given a bottle to drink from, for milk or otherwise.

But why should they have to, just to please others? What is so wrong from feeding straight from the breast as nature intended?

Oliver will not take a bottle.. he'll take a cup, but seeing as he prefers my nipple, why should I bother expressing?
