Thoughts on this....??

I think it's important that we step in to stop a parent who is abusing their child. I don't like to see a mother who hits her kids or curses at them or yells at them in an appropriate manner and I for one have interfered in situations like this. But BF a 4yr old does not fall under the category of abuse. I personally would not BF a 4yr old because it is my own personal opinion that a child does not need a memory of BF which would be unavoidable at age 4, but would certainly never lecture a stranger in public as it's none of my business.

I found breast feeding weird when my daughter was 3 days old...I know it may seem odd but I see my breasts as a sexual thing, and a thing for mine and my husbands sex life! I certainly wouldn't breast feed a 4 year old and think it's creepy to be honest... :-/ that's my opinion though. That 4 year old is at school - i bet none of his friends are still sucking on their mums boobs.

I understand we all have the right to our own opinions but I find statements like this inappropriate and disrespectful. You make it seem like we BF moms are getting sexual pleasure from feeding our children and it's offensive. I find it sad for a woman to have a purely sexual fascination with her breasts and not be able to appreciate the benefits of BF, even if she chooses not to BF. My relationship with my husband is separate from the BF relationship I have with my son, but they can and do co-exist in a healthy marriage not plagued by dysfunction. This statement "sucking on mums boobs" is uncalled for and something I'd expect from an immature foul-mouthed male teenager, not a mother.

It maybe different, but its also relevent. A lot of people say its wrong to FF, and even more say its wrong to BF. However, as different as they are, they are both doing the same thing. Feeding your baby, giving them nutrition. There for I would treat them the same, in my thoughts of using a bottle or having a booby feed in public. But maybe Im just a strange cut of wood? Well...actually that is true....I am strange....

No, really, there are disadvantages to continued bottlefeeding that don't apply to extended BFing so that's why I don't think they're comparable.

Your right as in the benefits... and as I would probably BF longer than bottle feed, it would be at home not in public, but thats me (I wanted to BF, I just had no milk supply, at all, I was on tons of medications and no help...boo hiss).

Boobs are sexual but not in the context of Breastfeeding, you seem to think they are one and the same and they are not.

I personally wouldn't bf till 4 years old but each to their own. I certainly wouldn't go around telling people off for doing it in public no matter how old their child is... What they do has nothing to do with me!

I bf Ozzie till he was a year and he self weaned so I have no experience of going over that point.

I don't bf in public. If I'm out and desperate I'll find a bf room/loo where I can. I've even once bf in the back seat of my car (I have tinted windows) because I just can't do it. I actually envy the mothers who can and they should be proud of themselves because at times I feel like a closet bfer

I would find a bathroom and use a stall...but thats just me..

I found it super hard to do at first but I got more confident after a few times especially after this old man was staring at me and LO while he was feeding, when LO had finished I winded him etc and the man said to his wife "oh I didn't realise she was feeding him". It made me realise I was actually quite discreet which was what I was most worried about.

I have only once been in a bf room where men were in there and I couldn't do it so I left and fed him standing up in a public loo. Most bf rooms I've been in only have other bfing women in there. I don't know, I think I'm odd for being like it

I havent had time to read all replies but iv got no problem with.I think its our society that has got it wrong, we have forgoten what boobies are for if every one treated it as normal,then it would be better in so many ways and there wouldt be any risk of that 4 year old being picked on ( i dont know whether he is,just saying) Im sorry your friend had such a hard time,and from another women x

BF doesnt mess teeth up like sucking a dummy or a bottle for prolonged periods of time does. I've seen loads of older babies and toddlers being given water or even worse juice in a bottle and just let to sip on it constantly. Terrible.

Yep, we had a nasty playground experience a while ago with a child hitting Ruby (looked at least 3.5) who was also running around drinking what looked to be pretty strong ribena from a bottle

Yep and do you not find that a bit weird? Its just cos cows can be bred to be milk cows and let people huge amounts everyday. If we could do that for humans it'd be human milk you buy on the shelves as its so much better for a human.

I dont think people find it strange because its breastmilk as opposed to cow milk, i think its the fact that he is still drinking from the breast that some people find a little weird. You would find it weird to see a child drinking directly from a cow udder! btw, each to their own, your child your choice xxx

I never noticed women BFing in public until I had a kid, lol... now I see it everywhere, but its like I didn't know what it really looked like before so I wasn't aware of it since most women have a blanket draped.
I've BF'd in public plenty but often done it in my car as I'd prefer to do it there to on a park bench but thats more about the comfort of the seat. I have tinted windows but I sit in the front seat to nurse, people don't really bother to look inside parked cars

I'm actually more surprised at the women who BF but feel they have to hide in their car or a bathroom! Why do you feel you have to do that? Because people stare? Because you would be "whipping them out in public" as someone put it

I think that's a shame, I really do! I would have loved to have able to BF my LO for more than the 5 measly days I managed. I would be proud to BF him in public and wouldn't give a toss what anyone thought!
