Katelyn latched right away after birth and took 6 sucks which the nurse said was really good. As I proceeded to TRY to feed her during the next 12 hours, it wasn't going well. i have flat nipples, and she was having a really hard time latching. She would get is, take a few sucks, then let go and scream. It was so frustrating. I noticed the tongue tie the first night. I called in the nurse and told her that I thought she was tongue tied. The nurse didn't really say anything about it. The next morning (24 hours old), a pediatrician from our practice, but not HER pediatrician, came to see her. I mentioned it to him too. His response was that this was something that they could grow out of.
The lactation nurse came in at 3pm and I mentioned to her that I thought Katelyn was tongue tied. Yup, she sure was. I was given a pump to help my milk come in sooner, nipple shields, and I was told to hand express too. This was helpful, but latching wasn't working still, and I was getting squashed nipples with a white compression bump.
Finally, on discharge day, her actual pediatrician came in. I told her what was going on and she looked. Yup, we will get that fixed. The appointment with the ENT was set for the following Wed, when she was 4 days old. We got to the appointment only to find out that the Dr had to go to an emergency surgery and our appointment was cancelled. At this point, I wasn't even trying to breastfeed. I was pumping and bottle feeding because this way I knew she was getting enough to eat. Our appointment was rescheduled for the following wed. (11 days old).
That was yesterday. It took like 5 seconds to fix. I wanted to give her a day to use her new tongue before I tried breastfeeding, but my nipples are so sore and cracked that I am afraid to try . Any suggestions???
I slather them in lanolin every time I am done pumping. I don't know how else to help myself........
