Tongue tie/Lip tie support thread

Katelyn latched right away after birth and took 6 sucks which the nurse said was really good. As I proceeded to TRY to feed her during the next 12 hours, it wasn't going well. i have flat nipples, and she was having a really hard time latching. She would get is, take a few sucks, then let go and scream. It was so frustrating. I noticed the tongue tie the first night. I called in the nurse and told her that I thought she was tongue tied. The nurse didn't really say anything about it. The next morning (24 hours old), a pediatrician from our practice, but not HER pediatrician, came to see her. I mentioned it to him too. His response was that this was something that they could grow out of.

The lactation nurse came in at 3pm and I mentioned to her that I thought Katelyn was tongue tied. Yup, she sure was. I was given a pump to help my milk come in sooner, nipple shields, and I was told to hand express too. This was helpful, but latching wasn't working still, and I was getting squashed nipples with a white compression bump.

Finally, on discharge day, her actual pediatrician came in. I told her what was going on and she looked. Yup, we will get that fixed. The appointment with the ENT was set for the following Wed, when she was 4 days old. We got to the appointment only to find out that the Dr had to go to an emergency surgery and our appointment was cancelled. At this point, I wasn't even trying to breastfeed. I was pumping and bottle feeding because this way I knew she was getting enough to eat. Our appointment was rescheduled for the following wed. (11 days old).

That was yesterday. It took like 5 seconds to fix. I wanted to give her a day to use her new tongue before I tried breastfeeding, but my nipples are so sore and cracked that I am afraid to try :(. Any suggestions???

I slather them in lanolin every time I am done pumping. I don't know how else to help myself........

Chevy, it's going to hurt. Sorry but it's true. However it will get better and getting your baby onto the breast will take time too.
What I did to repair my nipples was to pump, dry with a tissue, put on very diluted vinegar, remain topless until COMPLETELY dry and then lanolin.
Make sure you lubricate your pump flanges with olive oil to reduce chafing.

As for baby, your approach should be whatever YOU'RE comfortable with. That could be latching every session. Enduring the pain for ages. Or not. Personally, I latched her as much as possible but only took pain for a short while and then fed her by bottle. If my nips were too bad I waited for them to heal a little. Get a good LC to help you position and latch. Best thing I ever did. Try baby led attachment.

Make 110% sure you do the tongue exercises. They're invaluable and key to success.

Good luck!

wish i would have found this thread sooner thank you for your stories yall have giving me hope that we can keep bfing

My nicholas latched ok at birth not the best and he had an ok latch for the first 3 days but he never would eat for a long i did ask the doctor about it and got told it was due to him being so tired and from his low blood sugars he was born with day 4 his latch got better and he would eat for 5/10 minutes he was a very sleepy baby so he doctor said that was ok and he was putting on some weight then he got a stuffie nose at 2 weeks on the 3rd he was 8lbs 7.5oz a week later he had a check up for his nose the 9th and he had not gain any weight he was still sleeping alot so after seeing he gain wasnt good i started pumping to give after the breast we saw that when he would eat from the bottle he made funny little sound that he didnt made at the breast we were thinking its because the bottle was new to him after i started giving him EBM he started waking up more so i put him to breast as much as i could on the 12th still no gain even with him eatting all the time now that he is awake more its at this time my nipples start to get sore but only the tip of them so yesterday the 15th his doctor has us come in to check his weight i have been giving him the bottle after every fed to top him off he would eat 2oz his weight jumped up almost a lb up to 9lbs 6.5oz while there he wanted to eat i pumped before we went (which now im happy about) as my nipples hurt so bad i didnt want to bf in the office making sounds because it hurt as he started to eat his doc took notice of the sounds he was making and started asking all kinds of things a lot i said yes to then asked to look in his mouth she looked at me and told me your son is tongue and lip tied that is why he isnt eatting for a long time and wasnt putting weight on i cried with joy to finally know what was going on i was being hard on my self thinking that for some reason my milk wasnt what was best for him he goes on the 18th to get his PTT cut

Good luck Stacey! Give it time after it's clipped to see improvement. Do the exercises and tongue stretches. They seem cruel at the time but they benefit in the long run. Big hugs to you!

I will be i bookmarked the page just in case the doctor doesnt give me that list Im a little scared for my lil guy

He will cry and it might be uncomfortable for him for a day or so, depending on how far back they cut. I promise you, though, he won't remember.

i know he wont but i know i will cry like big baby with him i still cry when my 13 month old gets her shots should i ask about getting his lip done to or just his tongue im not sure if they will do his lip or not i know dd has to wait and see how her speech before they will do anything about her tongue tied which we found out she has the same day as ds after talking to the doctor i had her look at dds and she is lip and tongue tied but not as bad as ds and she never had a hard time BFing or using a bottle

Is this thread still active? Looking for support and advice. My little guy is 8 weeks today and had his lip and tongue tie release on Monday (3 days ago). My main concern is his reflux--I've been wearing him in a carrier all day and sleeping with him on my chest all night. I can't put him down for longer than a few minutes; as soon as he is horizontal he starts refluxing. So far I've seen little improvement in his reflux--maybe a bit less spitting up, but he is still having reflux episodes and seems uncomfortable a lot.

I've been doing chiropractic to help him with his tense muscles. He was prescribed Zantac at 6 weeks but it didn't do anything to help. I was hoping treating the tie would do the trick.

So, for anyone who has had a baby with reflux and a tongue/lip tie, how long did it take after revision for you to see improvements?

DS1 had reflux and TT which was snipped and we found it didn't improve but his feeding became much easier. He still vomited loads and suffered with the acidic pain but once we got him on omeperozole it was like having a different baby. He fed and didn't cry all the time. Good luck mama reflux is hard I feel for you but please know that it will get better xx
