uhh... breastfeeding an 8 year old??

Hey Blue bumpkin, yeh i understand, i guess ill prob hop back into bed to feed too but then on popping her back into her bassinette which will be next to my bed.

I sooo hope i succeed at BF, im really worried about it. I get comments like 'be prepared to feed pretty well non stop all day' :(

Uch hun don't let people get to you. It is hard work at first but sooo worth it. I never planned on co sleeping, it just happened tbh.

With the right support you will succeed :) And you will have all the support you need and more from the ladies on here! :flower:

Bnb was a life saver for me in the first few weeks with just so many unkowns. Its all so new at first but you get there and after the first week or two it becomes second nature. It helps to have people to talk to who have been through it all and thats what we're for :) xx

Kayleigh fed every 2 hours... not constantly :) She woke every 4 at night and slept through early. I had a pretty easy go with breastfeeding :) One thing my friend told me before I had Kayleigh was to be determind and it will be rough at first but push through because after a few weeks its super easy etc... be determind, say you will do it! Prepare yourself, but don't think it's terrible no matter what hun. I thought it would be so hard with growth spurts and marathon feeds and I've only seen one growth spurt with more frequent feeds at 6 months :) Just thought you might want to hear about an easy time :flower:

^ Thanks, ill be driving people nuts with questions no doubt! I really dont know what i would have done without BnB this whole pregnancy, has just been amazing! :D

I've just come into this debate, so I'm not really up to date on the co-sleeping part but about the BF, its sounds strange but I don't see the point in BF an 8 yr old? Yes it may provide nutrients but so does food? I personally would not BF past 2yrs old (however I don't have any LOs so this may change when I have my own baby lol). I think I associate BF with dependency, so I wouldn't want my LO to still be so dependent on me at 8. (Hope I haven't offended anyone!)

Thank you! My main worry is lack of lack of sleep and giving up because of that as i know formula fed babies tend to sleep longer as it takes longer for them to digest. My DH will be so disappointed if i dont succeed, he has offered already to fed her at least once during the night if i express for him. Bless Him x

On the contrary my friends who formula fed have kids who do not sleep through and never have and they are 6 months and 3 months. Formula fed babies suffer more with constipation and upset tummies as formula is heavier than BM. Just as a side note. Ppl assume FF is easier but it isnt hun. the grass isnt always greener :) xx

Plus with ff night feeds mean getting up in the night and preparing stuff totally awake but bf, once you've got the hang of it, cab be dine whe practically asleep.

We never thought about co-sleeping one way or the other but after 8 weeks of Byron refusing to sleep in the Moses basket and cot and only sleeping in our arms we were rely beginning to die from lack of sleep. We'd take it in turns to go downstairs with him and watch tv so the other could sleep. It was so dangerous, I'd be falling asleep with my hand over his face trying to settle him by stroking his head. When we brought him in our life changed and he stayed with us til 6 months. When I went back to work his sleep went pearshaped again and we're still working on that!

I think we all had comments like that, look at Aob she was put down in this forum for her determination and she is still breastfeeding over a month later. I had all my relatives and friends buying formula and telling me to hold on to them just in case, my mum saying to mix feeds and how hard it was. I seen so many in here put woman down who want to breastfeed because they failed.
and then theres the unsupportive poeple along the way to that have no business asking yet do and give their opinions. :dohh:

also studies prove breastfeeding mums get more sleep!

Its not something I would want to do. 8 years old is a bit much.

I pumped from the start, did in hospital as Kayleigh was early and jaundiced so she wasn't staying latched on and she wouldn't wake up... so the colostrum I managed to express was put into a small container and the NICU would tube feed/ finger feed her that mixed with a little formula until my milk came in, then it was all BM. I continued giving her 1-2 bottles of EBM within a 24 hour period until she was around 2 months, as it worried me she wasn't eating enough, which helped her clear her jaundice. She then was EBF until around 7 months as she refused a bottle LOL but now is happy with both :) I still don't use formula, and if she gets a bottle it's either with a bit of water of EBM. Anyways my point here is, it's recommended not to express for at least 6 weeks and introduce a bottle because it can cause nipple confusion... but if you need to because you are exhausted, express and cup feed LO :) Then you won't have to worry about the nipple confusion, or you could ask your nurse/doctor to show you how to finger feed before leaving the hospital. If you are worried about it, it's good to have a few solutions in mind, instead of just going on a whim :) Just a thought anyways. Also you get more sleep (most times) when breastfeeding as you don't need to get up, go to kitchen, make and warm bottles etc..., you just lift your nighty and tada! hehe Once you get better at it you can lay down in bed and snuggle and doze while LO feeds.

Don't hesitate to ask away! :D :flower:

Do u recommend a manual or electric breast pump?

Sorry this is straying a little OT now :dohh:

And thank You xo

electric , saves you doing work lol and defo easier. In saying that they where shit on me and I had no patience for them. I likes the medula one it had proper pump action, right till i broke the adapter on it.

Np hun xx

I used manual, a medela harmony and like it a lot, but I dont pump often, and even when I did it 1-2 times a day at first the manual worked great for me! A lot cheaper than electric too. If you plan to pump often I would recommend an electric though :) Here you can rent hospital grade pumps at a pretty good price! Medela swing is a popular one and I believe its electric, battery and a manual all in one :) I love Medela! Their storage bags, nip creams etc :D One thing I dont recommed is using their bottles. Fine for pumping and storing but their nips are not the best for feeding a BF baby IMO, which is odd...! I use Tommee Tippee closer to nature and like them a lot! They look like they would be good to help with nip confusion if you were going to use a bottle and not cup feed. I personally think cup feeding in the first week or two would be okay, but as they start to take in more, tube feeding would be good to do. :)

Oh also if you plan to pump, make sure when you feed your LO a bottle or any EBM you pump off then too, to help keep your supply up, or help increase :) Even in the night at first as you could get engorged, etc... giving any bottles can effect supply especially within the first months while your supply is regulating itself.

It's ok. I am interested in it too as i plan to definitely BF

By all means still breastfeed her but not directly from the nipple. IMO she is too old to suckle but doesn't mean she can't breastfeed from a cup

Thought provoking definitely.

There were a few things about the video/family I found unusual - but I really don't feel like it's for me to hand down a judgement.

What surprises me is after 28 pages of talk on 'appropriate' weaning ages, there's been very little said about what the child wants.

The thing that keeps me BFing more than anything else, is that my daughter is used to her world working that way. I have every faith in the pace she's set over the last year, and that she'll continue to make the right choices and give the right signals for what I need to do to help.

It might seem off topic, but tonight is her 2nd night in her junior bed. Did I think at 11.5 months my baby would be in a BED - no way! But actually it's right for her, she was ready.

To my mind, it doesn't matter what we THINK, children
