UK Women a must read

Oh that would have been handy!! Should I have received that in 2007 though!! I'd never heard of this before

They've got rid of £190 grant after 25 weeks. They've also got rid of the sure start maternity grant £500. You used to be able to get ssmg with each pregnancy but since there's so many benefit scroungers and immigrants popping out baby number 6+ it's been stopped and you can now only get it with your first child.

I got it last time after my son died and all of the money was spent on his funeral, flowers and wake because they denied me any monetary help from the bereavement fund. I've been told cos I had it last time I can't get it again regardless of the fact he died and I have no children! I don't blame this government. I blame the scroungers who take the piss out of this country and live off handouts. If that offends anyone, tough. It's my opinion.

The health in pregnancy grant has gone,I was lucky enough to get this with DS2,didnt claim it I dont think with DS1,the sure start grant of £500 is only for low incomes or people on certain benefits and is only claimable(if thats a word!) for one child,if you have any other children under 16 then you cant claim it

Health in Pregnancy Grant was cancelled in April this year by the new Government.

Sure Start Maternity Grant is only available for people on income support, jobseekers allowance, etc.

Can you get the SSMG if its baby no 2 and your on income.support?

I'd like to say thank you to the benefit scroungers and the government for changing it! If you can't afford to fund a baby yourself, don't have one IMO!

Yes accidents happen, I am accidently pregnant on my 5th, and my OH left, leaving me on income support.. bit I certainly don't expect the government to bail me out with a grant!

Sorry for your loss, also! x

No, you can only claim for it on your 1st child x

"The government will stop issuing the Health in Pregnancy Grant from 1 January 2011. Women who reach the 25th week of pregnancy before 1 January 2011 will still be entitled to the grant, providing they meet the other conditions."

DWP (2011): "Parent's Benefits", [Online]:UK:Available:https://www.direct.gov.uk/en/Nl1/Newsroom/Budget/Budget2010/DG_188501[18th Sept 2011].

Midwifes/surgeries should give away an updated "The Pregnancy Book" from the NHS. I've also got a 2009 edition that obviously is not accurate anymore regarding the Rights & Benefits chapter. If that's too expensive, an accurate leaflet explaining changes should be attached to old editions.

Have a look at the link above to be aware of other changes regarding Sure Start Grant et al.

Sorry for your loss little nugget. I do however think your comments are plain offensive. Thank goodness the government are less judgemental/ discriminatory in deciding who they will and wont pay grants to.

I had this in my first pregnancy but was told it was being stopped this year.

My midwife confirmed to me it was stopped in April.

Typical of our government!

X

Ju_bubs, take it easy...it's not good for your baby to have those rants...

Your indignation, outrage, and anger show that at the moment you are very very annoyed with life...they are also offensive for those of us who are going to claim the Sure Start Grant just because it is there, available for all those who want it for his/her first baby.

Also, you contradict yourself when you say that if you can't afford to fund a baby yourself, don't have one, when you have four and another one coming... I'm supposing then that in order to have four (and one cooking, as you say), either you are really rich or your stranged husband was no less than a 1st division footballer....Four children must be very expensive indeed...It's great then you have always had the necessary dough...lucky you...

If you think the UK is full of scroungers and the benefit system should be more "scrounger-safe" to avoid all those frauds you have in mind, it is relatively easy: go and vote in the next election for whatever party advocates for a more strict benefit system or for the elimination of the welfare system alltogether.

Have a lovely day and regards.

(and a draw a line on this now...)

So, just to clarify, is there anything we can get (if you are not on benefits). I have to say my SIL and sister are both on benefit and even with this change of government they still have more disposable income than me.

I'm a teacher and my partner has a good job too, but after the mortgage and bills, we have nothing left. We don't buy clothes, have holidays or meals out. It sucks - I would really appreciate a wee something for the government.

But since my SIL and sister get their rents, council tax and "other stuff" paid for they are currently enjoying a holiday in Croatia and an IPAD 2 repectively.

I checked out tax credits. I put in my income and my partners income and £800 in nursery fees that we will have to pay and it still said we are entitled to £0!

So I guess I'm asking is there really nothing the "squeezed middle" can be helped out with? xxx

Talk about getting carried away Peyre! I think you have over-reacted!

I dont know why but thats really got my back up! Going to shut up now but wish people on here wouldnt post such rude, personal and patronising posts about people they dont know! xx

Edited coz I'm in idiot and didn't read properly :haha:

Sealgirl: perhaps you should look on the bright side that you're able to invest your money in a mortgage and can manage child care costs. I don't see how your family members are managing to afford to go on holiday. I worked for a charity with people in temporary accommodation and they literally had zero disposable income when on income support. Life was a real struggle. The people who went on holiday did so using credit cards and had horrific financial management skills. I don't know how they managed to open credit cards in the first place!

I do wish people would not judge who does and does not deserve benefits. An objective system is in place to do just that. If we're not entitled to anything, we're the privileged ones. We should feel lucky that we have a system that helps the less fortunate in our country. I have moved from the UK to the US recently and it's really opened my eyes to what a world of capitalism and greed is like: not nice.

I'm fairly sure that the only person posting 'rude personal posts about people they dont know', was actually you. I was posting about benefit scroungers.. unless you class yourself as a benefit scrounger, my post had nothing to do with you.
